Aashiq Abu has been accused of not paying salaries to the employees working on his new film. The accusations were made by Jaffar Kanjirappally, who is the vice-president of FEFKA (Film Employees Federation of Kerala) while speaking to a news channel. Aashiq Abu, who is presently awaiting the release of his movie Rifle Club, had earlier criticised B Unnikrishnan, fellow director and FEFKA general secretary, over how he has been handling the repercussions of Justice Hema Committee Report, post which several filmmakers have been accused of sexual misconduct. What Is Justice Hema Committee Report? Speaking to MediaOne, Jaffar Kanjirappally was irked when he was told Aashiq Abu had demanded the removal of B Unnikrishnan from the FEFKA council. Pledging loyalty to B Unnikrishnan, Kanjirappally instead alleged that he and other crew members had worked in Abu's film for a month and they are yet to be paid their dues. He claims that salaries due of INR 40 lakh have to be paid to them. Kanjirappally also alleged that Aashiq Abu has a personal enmity against B Unnikrishnan, whom he refers to as his 'leader'.

According to a report in Onmanorama, FEFKA had issued a statement on the Hema Committee report, saying, "We are aware of the criticism against the silence we maintained in the issue. We do not want to issue empty, fancy statements but recommend strong action and policies that will bring about a huge change within the industry." This prompted Aashiq Abu to criticise B Unnikrishnan for his hypocritical stand on the matter. He had said, "I don't have issues with FEFKA, but I disagree with the functioning of the association under the leadership of B Unnikrishnan."
