Can a Rs 550-600 crore film has the capacity to turn profitable in India? A hell lot is riding on the box office collections of 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in the lead, the most talked about film in recent times. While 2.0 is not the masterpiece we had expected, but it is a movie that we are rooting for. The special effects and sound design in the film are outstanding, and it has elements that play right to the front galleries. So for another movie to be made on this scale in India, it is quite important for 2.0 to earn profits and earn itself a hit tag. We may not need a 3.0, but we definitely need something on that lines! 2.0: 15 WTF Moments in Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson's Film (SPOILER ALERT).
For that to happen, 2.0 has to do pretty well in the theatres, doing much more than Baahubali 2, currently the highest-grossing Indian film of all time at the box office (domestic). The movie has taken off to a great start at the box office, both in India and overseas. As per trade analyst Ramesh Bala, 2.0 has collected Rs 290 crore worldwide (gross) in three days, and the movie might cross Rs 200 crore (nett) in India when Sunday's collections are out. The weekend collections have been much higher, with even the Hindi version doing some good business. 2.0 Box Office: Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar's Film Gets The Second-Highest Opening For an Indian Film Ever But The Battle is Far From Half-Won!
That said, it is difficult to track the collections, as when it comes to South movies, concrete figures are hard to find and producers are known to exaggerate the earnings, the latter habit something that even Bollywood producers are accused. Even the overseas collections are not easy to track. Even if we go by the above figures, 2.0 is predicted to earn Rs 350 crore worldwide by Sunday. With satellite and digital rights being sold for Rs 120 crore and Rs 60 crore respectively, the movie's earnings are within Rs 500 crore. So the upcoming week is very important for the film.
So while 2.0 has done some really good business in the opening weekend, we have to wait for a few more days for the movie to be called a hit. After all, making a Rs 700 crore business is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone for an Indian film.
