There is something called as law of averages. As per Wikipedia, it mean 'The law of averages is the law that a particular outcome or event is inevitable or certain simply because it is statistically possible'. In simple layman terms, it means that if you are getting the same result for consecutive series of opportunities, you can expect a different result next time. In Bollywood, there have been actors or directors, who give a series of hits or flops before one movie arrives and changes their fortunes. Like for example, a Tubelight broke Salman Khan's habit of giving blockbusters on the trot. The same goes for directors too.

We have had film-makers in Bollywood who haven't given a flop yet, like Rajkumar Hirani, Ali Abbas Zafar and Karan Johar. And then there are directors who give hits back to back, only for one movie to arrive and break that winning streak.  Recently, Aiyaary did the same to director Neeraj Pandey, who hasn't given a single flop since he made his debut with A Wednesday. In this special feature, we will look at five such directors, whose winning streak was ruined with one box office disappointment.

Neeraj Pandey - Aiyaary

Prior hits: A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

His debut movie, A Wednesday, was a surprise critical and commercial hit despite having no major superstars. Though his followups didn't match the quality of his debut, Neeraj Pandey enjoyed commercial successes with each one of them. But his latest spy thriller, Aiyaary, despite humongous expectations, neither impressed the critics nor the masses giving him his first flop.

Kabir Khan - Phantom

Prior hits: New York, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Kabir Khan's debut movie, Kabul Express, had won the critics' love but failed to impress at the box office. But he has getting love in the department with his subsequent releases, with Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, turning out to be huge blockbusters. But the rosy picture ended when his much delayed Phantom, starring Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan, broke his winning streak. But the biggest disappointment was his next release, Tubelight, that also broke Salman Khan's lucky streak too (and ended their fruitful partnership in the process)

Aditya Chopra - Befikre

Prior hits: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mohabbatein, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Aditya Chopra is the man who gave Bollywood its longest running movie in DDLJ. None of the movies that came later, made him, matched the success of his debut, but they were hits. And then arrived Befikre, his first movie that didn't star Shah Rukh Khan, and instead had Ranveer Singh in the lead. Despite glitzy promos and chartbuster music, Befikre failed to impress both the classes and the masses, delivering an average performance at the box office.

Remo D'Souza - A Flying Jatt

Prior hits:  F.A.L.T.U., ABCD, ABCD 2

Choreographer turned director Remo D'Souza delivered a surprise sleeper hit in his debut movie, that was a ripoff of Hollywood movie Accepted. He made a name of his own, making a successful franchise out of the dance movies, ABCD. But his attempt at making a superhero movie, A Flying Jatt, backfired while also giving the lead star, Tiger Shroff, his first flop. But Remo still has a potential winner in his hands, as he is directing box office gold Salman Khan in Race 3.

Rohit Shetty - Dilwale

Prior hits:   Golmaal Returns, All The Best: Fun Begins, Golmaal 3,  Singham, Bol Bachchan, Chennai Express, Singham Returns

Though he delivered flops at the start of his career, ever since Golmaal Returns, Rohit Shetty hadn't given a single flop yet. However, Dilwale changes things for him. It does sound harsh to call Dilwale a flop, since the movie performed well overseas. But the movie underperformed in India, while also kick-starting Shah Rukh Khan's bad luck at the box office too. Thankfully, Rohit's good friend Ajay Devgn came to his rescue and gave him his box office mojo with Golmaal Again in 2017.
