Sometime back news suggested that Saif Ali Khan was roped in for Ajay Devgn’s film Taanaji. Buzz was that Saif was being considered to play the part of an antagonist in this movie. The Bazaar actor was supposedly going to portray the role of Aurangazeb’s Moghul army chief Udaybhan Rathod’s character in the film. However, fresh reports suggest that the actor will in fact be playing the role of the mightiest Maratha warrior in the history, Shivaji. While there is no official confirmation from Saif or Ajay’s team it would indeed be interesting to see the Omkara duo team up again.

Devgn’s Taanaji is set in the 1670s when the Battle of Sinhagad was fought. Ajay will play the central character and besides Saif, the actor will reunite with wife Kajol again on screen in this film that is set to go on floors from November. If buzz is to be believed then Riteish Deshmukh had plan to make a movie on Shivaji, however the movie failed to get bankrolled and was shelved. The Houseful hero’s film was supposed to be a bilingual. Ajay Devgn’s film on Tanaji Malusare might make Deshmukh’s film’s chances of being made even bleaker.

In fact, filmmaker Rohit Shetty who attributes his success to Golmaal hero in an interview recently expressed his wish to make a movie on Shivaji. The Simmba director said, “If I ever have to make a film then it will be on Shivaji. It needs lot of money.”

Knowing Bollywood’s penchant to pick on a popular trend and try to milk it while it works we will not be surprised if more biopics on Shivaji are made in the coming days. After all when Ajay made The Legend Of Bhagat Singh there were two other movies on the freedom fighter that released in the same year. And yes, more recently we also saw that there were three films being made on the Battle of Saragarhi – one of which has Akshay Kumar (Kesari). Coming back to Tanaji, even as we wait for an official confirmation from Saif on playing Shivaji’s role in Taanaji, we cannot stop feeling hopeful and excited about seeing the crackling chemistry of Ajay and the Nawab of Pataudi’s awesome chemistry on screen.
