Peter Tork of 'The Monkees' Dies at 77, American Musician Battled Tongue Cancer
He was known for the hit TV series the Monkees and was the oldest member of the band. The fictitious pop band created a wave of popularity amongst fans in the 1960s.
Peter Halsten Thorkelson a.k.a Peter Tork breathed his last on Thursday. As per the reports, the 77-year-old American singer-actor passed away due to a rare disease of tongue cancer. He was best known as keyboardist and bass guitarist of the Monkees. He was known for the hit TV series the Monkees and was the oldest member of the band. The fictitious pop band created a wave of popularity amongst fans in the 1960s. He was also the main man behind spreading the monkee mania. He infact, was a known figure amongst the rest of them as he also co-wrote the theme song of he second season of The Monkees, "For Pete's Sake" along with Joey Richards.
In 1986, Tork reunited with Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz for the grand reunion of the the Monkees. The fans were over the moon with this much-awaited team bonding.
Peter was always destined to be in the field of music as he started training for the same at the mere age of 9. He started taking piano lessons at that young age and also developed interest in playing other instruments like Banjo, acoustic bass and guitars later on. During higher studies, as he joined the folk music scene at Greenwich village, he became friends with then budding stars like Stephen Stills. He gradually entered the mainstream entertainment industry and the rest is history. He will be remembered by his true fans forever. RIP Peter Tork.
