Bengali Actress Nusrat Jahan won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with the TMC ticket from West Bengal's Basirhat constituency, defeating BJP's Sayantan Basu. It was March 12, 2019, when the current CM of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, announced her name welcoming her in the Trinamool Congress party. Nusrat Jahan won against BJP's candidate Sayantan Basu and the Congress candidate Qazi Abdur Rahim, the sitting Baduria MLA. Basirhat comprises of a majority of Muslim voters which favours TMC. On 19th May, people voted for the Basirhat constituency. Nusrat Jahan began her career as a professional model participating her first ever beauty contest Fair-one Miss Kolkata in 2010. She then made her cinema debut with 2011 Bengali film Shotru. She then featured in Khoka 420 that was a Telugu remake which gives her recognition in the Bengali Film Industry. She was last seen in 2018 Bengali film Naqaab. Nusrat Jahan had quite a busy schedule campaigning through this big constituency. Mamata Banerjee in her rally for Nusrat earlier said that people of Basirhat didn't do riots, it was plotted by BJP.
