The most prestigious honours in Indian cinema, the National Film Awards 2019 winners were announced on August 9. The 66th National Film Awards were announced in Delhi after the jury picked the best of Indian cinema from 31 categories. This time Bollywood seemed to have had a huge sweep what with the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and many of the top honours being won by the Hindi film celebs. Among the technical awards, such as Editing, Action and Special Effects, the South films won big. Although, the audience seems to be quite upset with the recently announced winners as the jury left out some big films that could have been contenders for the prestigious awards. While films such as Uri, Andhadhun and KGF were immensely popular among the audiences, given that the National Awards celebrate the best in cinema, social media erupted in anger over the films such as Mammootty's Tamil language film Peranbu or Mari Selvaraj's hard-hitting anti-caste drama Pariyerum Perumal being royally snubbed.
Hours before the film awards were to be announced, Twitter was full of messages hoping for Dhanush's Vada Chennai to get its much-deserved recognition at the National Film Awards but unfortunately, that did not come through as the film won not a single award. Here's looking at films that did not get their dues at the National Film Awards 2019.
Tumbbad:
The Sohum Shah film has been one of 2018's milestone films thanks to its stunning visuals, strong storyline and for breathing life into a genre that has mostly been disappointing in Bollywood. Combining horror, mystery and fantasy in an amazing mix, the film surely deserved a mention for its brilliant cinematography and sound design. It's also a shame that the film's child actor Mohammad Samad failed to get any recognition for his amazing work on the film. Peranbu:
As mentioned above, the Mammootty starrer is a special film for Tamil cinema, capturing a never-seen-before father-daughter relationship. The film won some brilliant reviews from the critics for its powerful performances and story-telling. The film also had Mammootty shed his usual macho image for a much subdued and vulnerable character which won him several praises.
Pariyerum Perumal:
Pariyerum Perumal directed by Mari Selvaraj starring Kathir and Anandhi was yet another powerful film from 2018. The film dealt with caste discrimination in a completely different manner than the way it has been previously presented in Tamil cinema. The film's sincerity won the audience over.
Ee.Ma.Yau
Malayalam-language satire film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and written by P. F. Mathews is realism at its best. The film's writing had particularly won praises as the film deals with death and its impact on those living in the most significant manner. The film revolved around how the death of a man throws his family into turmoil as they scramble to plan his funeral.
Vada Chennai:
Dhanush's 2018 film won the audience with its apt portrayal of a North-Madras youngster who becomes a gangster and film was particularly hailed for Vetri Maaran's skilful direction. The film with its multiple subplots is a satisfying gangster drama and hence fans of the film are surprised as to why the film didn't win a single award.
