Island season 1 was perhaps something we kdrama fans were really looking forward to eagerly. SK very rarely goes wrong with fantasy fiction especially if it has some ancient folklore attached to it. But Island doesn't fall in that category, unfortunately. For some reason, despite having a great theme and story to pursue, the narrative keeps hovering over proving the heroic abilities of Van (Kim Nam Gil), continuous conversation about awakening Won Mi-ho's powers, which never happens and Priest Yohan's (Cha Eun Woo) rookie yet cocky self. Let us tell you five reasons why the first season of Island was quite underwhelming. Island Season 1 Finale: Cha Eun Woo's Breakdown and Choi Tae Joon's Cameo Leave Fans In Tears (SPOILER ALERT!).
Loud BGM
We get that Kim Nam Gil needs a superman-ish entry but it doesn't have to be accompanied by ear-splitting BGM. His death stares and complete coldness towards the lust demons are enough. Music can't heighten an emotion beyond a point, it has to be the people in the scene doing that job.
The entry itself
Nam Gil's Flash-like entry Da Hee gets in Demon troubles where the camera waits for him to get into a complete standing position after making a swift landing needs to go. It's not required every time! After a while, it stopped having the desired effect on us.
Capable girl but...
Da Hee as Mi Ho is shown as a wealthy girl whose fighting tricks are to die for and yet, Van just never trains her how to deal with the lust demons. What was the point of showing her feisty self when it didn't really add much to the story?
Cha Eun Woo's brother
It's good to give some backstory to other characters rather than obsessing over Van alone, but Yohan's past was wrapped up in one episode. His brother, who becomes a casualty, could turn into a human after being possessed by the demon. Van just mentions they live among humans in the latter's form but series never explain how. Also, what was the hurry to end this side story? Building on it would have added more dimensions to the plot. Villain takes forever to enter
In Van's past, there are two kids who manage to cope with the venom injected into them. Not much is shown about his companion and then suddenly there's Gungtan (Sung Joon). Also, he appears so late in the 6-episode show that you almost forget about him. Quite a neglectful way to deal with the main antagonist because Sung Joon as a villain looks menacing.
The second season of Island is expected to hit Amazon Prime on February 24. Hopefully, they will be able to turn things around here.
