X-Men: Dark Phoenix starring Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender released last week and received not only poor reviews from the critics but also from the audiences. Fox first started their run on the X-Men movies back in 2000 but it seems have got a disappointing ending with Dark Phoenix. Many expected Dark Phoenix to be the big finale and wanted it to end with a bang but the film was garnered with a dismal $33 million opening in the United States, much lower than its previous films. It is believed that Fox didn't pick the right notes from the last, X-Men: Apocalpyse's performance which was staggeringly low in the entire franchise and even received poor fan reviews. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the executives at Fox were under the impression that Apocalypse's failure was due to its scale. They said, "There was a misguided feeling that [Apocalypse] was an anomaly, that we just got it wrong" and the Fox insider further told the entertainment portal, "We were wrong".
After the Apocalypse debacle, the makers wanted Dark Phoenix to be the anti-Apocalypse, on a smaller scale with less spectacle. This led to Dark Phoenix being too small for a summer release, but too big for an off-season. But this wasn't the only problem on their plate, Fox gave its February date to Alita: Battle Angel, and moved the X-Men release to early June instead. By the time the film's actual marketing began, the Disney-Fox deal was in its final stages and that resulted in a "muddled" campaign as told to THR by the Fox insider. One of the key problems that came ahead in the reviews was the film's half-baked character storylines and this was a result of the significant reshoots that took place last year. This certainly sums up how the entire mismanagement from the behind-the-scenes cost X-Men franchise its dullest film.
