With films nowadays showcasing the magic behind-the-curtains, the art of acting is rather more appreciated than it used to be before. So, to celebrate this National Actors Day, let’s take a look at seven films that celebrate the art of acting and provided us with stories that we couldn’t take our eyes off.
The Artist
Set between the 1920s and 1930s, The Artist is a powerful piece of cinema that is set in the backdrop of silent films being overtaken by the talkies. At the core of it, it’s a romance between an older silent film star and a rising actress, however it’s a great celebration of the time-period that honoured the art of acting in silent films and the talkies as well.
Singin’ in the Rain
Just like the previous entry on our list, Singin’ in the Rain also focuses in the shift of cinema that saw silent films being replaced by the Talkies. Depicting a rather more innocent side of Hollywood, Singin’ in the Rain focuses on three stars being caught up in the middle of the transition in cinema that took place in the 1920s.
A Star Is Born
We have seen this story being told in Hollywood countless of times, and it never gets old. Focusing on the love story between a fading away movie star who helps launch the career of an up-and-coming actress, the film from the 1930s is a breathtaking worldview into the art form of acting and just powerful cinema can be.
Birdman
A black-comedy that’s shot to look like it’s a one complete take, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman is a perfect view into the life of a faded away Hollywood star who played a superhero and is now trying to find fame again by being featured on Broadway. It’s quite interesting seeing as to how Michael Keaton, who portrays the lead had a similar experience after playing Batman, but one inspired performance changes everything forever.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist escapist comedy is set in the golden age of Hollywood that focuses on Rick Dalton and his stunt double, Cliff Booth. With the Manson Family on the rise and an actor-stunt double duo doing what they do best, the film is a celebration of Hollywood that all leads to a flamethrower being fired at the end. While the context behind its ending is deeper, the journey still very much focuses on an actor just trying his best to put on a world class performance.
Sunset Boulevard
A 1950s classic, Sunset Boulevard is noir black comedy that is named after Hollywood’s most iconic street. When a screenwriter is drawn into a demented world by a silent film actress who wishes to make a return to the big screen, the story of reigniting the fires of glory begins. Often regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, Sunset Boulevard is a classic everyone needs to watch at least once. La La Land
Coming to Damien Chazelle’s look into the fantastical world of Hollywood, the film centers on two individuals trying to excel in their lines of passion. While Sebastian wants to make it somewhere as a Jazz player, Mia wants to become an actress and experience the fame that comes along with it. Having a magical and colourful visuality to it, Chazelle’s La La Land still focuses on the harsh realities of Hollywood that still somehow is able to find the optimism within all the struggle. Being a love letter to the golden age, this is all a film fan could ask for.
