Venom Movie Review: Here's What International Critics are Saying About Tom Hardy's Superhero Film (Psst...Not So Good!)

Venom is all set to release worldwide on October 5, however, the reviews are already coming in from the US from the early screenings.

Venom is considered as one of Spider-Man's biggest foes, but there are comics that also show him as an anti-hero. It all depends on who the creator is and which human host has been taken over by the symbiote. In movies, Venom made its first appearance in Spider-Man 3, when the symbiote took over Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. Now a decade later, Eddie Brock is returning to the big screen, only this time as the lead, sans Spider-Man, and played by Tom Hardy. Venom Star Tom Hardy Takes Riz Ahmed's 'Mogambo Khush Hua' Challenge and We Are Completely Floored With The Result - Watch Video.

Venom, produced by Sony Pictures, is their latest attempt to create a Spider-Man shared universe, after failing to do so with The Amazing Spider-Man series. The movie is directed by Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame. Riz Ahmed plays the main antagonist, while Michelle Williams is the female lead. Venom is all set to release worldwide on October 5, however, the reviews are already coming in from the US from the early screenings. Unfortunately, not them all are saying good about the film. Check out some of the reviews below -

BBC says, "In the circumstances, any negative review might seem superfluous, because it could hardly be more damning than the assessment made by the film’s own leading man. But it’s easy to see what prompted Hardy’s complaint. Venom is obviously the victim of some brutal editing, and the derivative, sketchily plotted B-movie that’s left is as scrappy and hurried as a trailer."

Variety says, "'Venom' is a textbook case of a comic-book film that’s unexciting in its ho-hum competence, and even its visual-effects bravura. Make no mistake: The effects can be dazzling. The alien matter splattering itself around like random tentacled liquid, the way Venom cross-breeds Spider-Man’s skyscraper-hopping agility with the Hulk’s dynamo destructiveness — it’s all diverting eye candy. But to what end? This gateway into the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters (get ready: there are 90!) may not sputter as badly as Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy,” but it could turn out to be a similar case of a franchise kickoff that doesn’t fully attain franchise liftoff."

IGN says, "Venom suffers from the same lack of cohesion and rejects everything that might’ve turned it into a badass joyride in the vein of Deadpool or Guardians of the Galaxy. The result is a muddled hodgepodge that isn’t sure whether it wants to be comedic or take its troubled antihero way too seriously. (When your main character is threatening to eat someone’s pancreas as a tasty snack, you probably want to lean into the absurdity.)"

The Guardian says, "Hardy does an awful lot of very broad-comedy split personality acting once the symbiote is inside him. They squabble. “Hungry!” the symbiote will boom inside his head in a deep growly voice and Tom will immediately convulse into a: “Wha...? What was that..?” routine. He thrashes and lurches around the streets like Jerry Lewis’s The Nutty Professor."

Telegraph says, "Perhaps the hardest thing to process about Venom – and allow me to warn you that this is not an easy film to process in general – is the sheer ugliness of Venom himself. Sony Pictures appear to have lavished a nine-figure sum on, and are now hoping to establish an entire cinematic universe on the back of, a character who looks like someone drizzled Creme Egg filling onto a bin bag."
