Jon Favreau's retelling of Disney's classic The Lion King is receiving some mixed response from critics and fans. While everybody is applauding the marvellous CGI work, the lack of emotions and sentiments makes the storytelling too dull to reminisce the classic. In fact, I would rather go back to the 1994 Lion King film than rewatch Favreau's work as what lacks in this film is something that we cherished in the original movie. But while watching the film, I couldn't help but think about the first five films that came across my head. Black Panther, Baahubali, Hamlet, Thor and even Haider, all possess the same plot but with different storytelling. Sure, while Thor didn't live up to the expectations of what the story could have possibly garnered, the other movies managed to make good money and find acclaim from the critics. Black Panther
Was this comparison made already? Well, how about we state the obvious yet again. The story couldn't have been more different! However, with an all-black cast and Marvel Cinematic bliss, Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther did manage to touch hearts.
Baahubali
How come nobody discussed this? The two-part Baahubali film of SS Rajamouli is simply a cinematic marvel of a storyline derived from The Lion King. With some lovely essence of Indian royalness and brotherhood, the story once again goes back to the Disney classic as a brother is betrayed and deceived. Even the death scene (Kattappa killing Baahubali) with all the fireworks in the background is taken from the Lion King!
Thor
The first part and the rest of Thor franchises have nothing but family wars as they all want their rightful share on the throne. Sure, the one thing missing in Thor (the first part) is Loki's interest in Jane (Thor's earthling girlfriend). But otherwise, the plot couldn't have been more similar to The Lion King as one brother learns the true sense of Kingsmanship while the other sneakily tries to get his hands on throne.
Hamlet
Shakespeare fans? Well, if you're not, perhaps now you will be. Originally, it seems as though The Lion King was a rendition of The Tragedy of Hamlet, the play written by William Shakespeare. Of course, though, the film once again takes us back to The Lion King even though Hamlet is clearly mentioned in the title itself. Once again, the story is the same as Prince Hamlet returns to avenge his father's death against uncle Claudius. Claudius murdered Prince Hamlet's father to seize the throne as well as marry his mother.
Haider
How different is Shahid Kapoor's Haider from Hamlet? Not much. But the only difference is how Vishal Bharadwaj mentioned the direct reference to Hamlet while we realised the storyline being the same as The Lion King.
