In the same way, Cinema has portrayed superheroes in a similar fashion as well. With many societal issues sprinkled throughout them, superheroes have been portrayed at time as if they existed in the real world. Having to overcome the judgements of others, these six underrated movies showcased how these characters overcame their issues in order to do something larger-than-life and prove those around them wrong. So, to celebrate this Superhuman Day, let’s take a look at six underrated superhero movies that you can watch.
The Incredible Hulk
Nowadays almost forgotten to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pantheon, The Incredible Hulk was a pretty well-done adaptation of Marvel’s Green Goliath. While the characterisation at times could be a bit barebones, it did give us a savage look at Hulk and the conflict that Bruce Banner has to go through as everyone around him has a death-wish for him. Edward Norton gives an inspired performance, and its fun to see Hulk smash.
Watchmen
Bringing the superheroes from the reel world to the real world, Zack Snyder did the unthinkable by bringing Watchmen to the big screens. Being deemed almost unfilmable, he was able to provide a good portrayal of Alan Moore’s comic with just enough differences that it could stand on its own as well. Focusing on a group of superheroes whose time seems to be feigning in a divided world, the exploration of moralities is something concept of Watchmen thrives on.
Hulk
Another Hulk film, but this time directed by Ang Lee, the Eric Bana-starrer was criticised for its odd pacing, however it’s the one movie that has been able to capture Bruce Banner’s struggle with the monster inside really well. Perhaps having one of the best characterisations of the character, its not so much about a green giant destroying everything in his way, but the painful story of someone doing his best to come to terms with the situation. That’s what the character is about.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Andrew Garfield’s first turn as Spider-Man was quite the inspired on as director Marc Webb brought a stylistic pallet to the iconic web-slinger. Retelling the origins of the character, the film sees him come into his own while taking on the Lizard and also learning about the past of his parents. While it doesn’t bring anything new to table regarding Spider-Man as a character, it still presented everything regarding the character very well. Also, gave us some of the best visuals we will ever see in a Spidey film.
The Wolverine
Featuring Wolverine in Japan, there were extremely less expectations going into this movie considering X-Men: Origins – Wolverine failed to impress. However, this outing was able to shatter all those expectations. Bringing the rage and suffering of Logan as a character, the movie eventually turns into a redemption romp that plays to the strengths of Hugh Jackman, who had perfected playing the character by this point. Man of Steel
Coming on to the most divisive entry on this list, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was the talk of the year when it originally came out. Grounding Superman with real-world attributes, the story sees him take on the remaining Kryptonians as Zod threatens to destroy Earth. The film is very much a different take on the character that sees him build towards the symbol of hope. With Earth-shattering action and a general sense of scale, this is a film that perhaps needs some revision to its reception.
