It is strange that May 4 is celebrated as Star Wars Day when it has nothing to do with the film. None of the Star Wars movies has released in this date, as they usually seek for a year-end release. The first Star Wars film, A New Hope, did release during May, but it came out on May 25. So why is May 4 celebrated as Star Wars Day, and not May 25? Well, the story goes that it has something to do with the former Prime Minister of England, the late Margaret Thatcher. Star Wars Day 2019: Date, History And Significance of Celebrating the Franchise Set in a 'Galaxy Far Far Away'.

She was appointed as the Prime Minister of the country on May 4, 1979, after which a newspaper congratulated her with the phrase, 'May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie.' This was a play on the popular Star Wars quote, "May The Force Be With You!". An interesting thing to note here is that this line often misattributed to Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope, when in fact, he uses different phrases to talk about the Force ('The Force will be with you...always'). In reality, it is General Dodonna who uses this exact phrase first in A New Hope and later, by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Coming back to the relevance of May 4, years later, several Star Wars club began to use this day to celebrate all they love about the movies. Later, even The Walt Disney Company, who currently owns LucasFilm that produced the Star Wars movies, have observed this day to celebrate Star Wars. They do so by having festivities related to the movie canon in their various parks, including Disneyland. Star Wars Day 2019: May the Fourth Be With You! 5 Fun Ways to Celebrate May 4.
