Sony's upcoming animated feature, Spider-Man: Into Spider-Verse, is earning high praises from its early reviews. The makers had held special fan and media screenings the USA last week, and after the embargo has been lifted off, on November 29, reviews have been pouring in praising the animated superhero film, featuring Miles Morales as the lead, for its plot, direction and animation. Some of the journos have been called it one of the best Spider-Man films ever made, with claims that it could even replace Spider-Man 2 as the best picture based on the Marvel superhero. Buoyed, perhaps, by this warm reception, Sony had already looked ahead in expanding this Spider-Verse. As per a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man: Into Spider-Verse is not only getting an obvious sequel, but also a spin-off! While the details of both the projects are vague for now, some interesting details have already been put out by the publication. For the sequel, Joaquim Dos Santos, known for helming Netflix's Voltron series, has been roped in the direct the film. He will be replacing Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie), who directed the first film. Lord and Miller will continue to be associated with the film, perhaps as the executive producers.
The spin-off, however, is a more interesting idea. The project will be helmed by Lauren Montgomery, and will be a female-led Spider-man movie that could feature the likes of Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Madame Web, Spider-Girl and Silk.
