DC Superhero movies in the past few years have always been accused of being a bit too dark in tone. This was said to be a deliberate attempt to separate the franchise from Marvel's family-friendly, light-hearted movies. However, the move has not gone down well with fans. Things changed with Wonder Woman's success, where the studio executives learnt that sometimes it is okay to sit back and relax, instead of making things too depressing. That's why their upcoming movies, like Aquaman and Shazam!, has opted for a more light viewing.
If you are not aware of who Shazam is, it is a manifestation of every kid's superhero fantasy. Making his big screen debut, Shazam is the superhero alter-ego of the young Billy Batson. The first trailer of the movie has been recently revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, and has then appeared on online platforms. As expected it is an origin movie, with the trailer revealing an orphaned Batson getting a new foster home, meeting his new friend Frederick "Freddy" Freeman, and then getting his powers from the previous Shazam. We then see how Batson as the new Shazam discovers his powers in some hilarious scenes. There are also a few pop culture references like the mention of Game of Thrones, Batman's claw making its presence and Superman's name appearing in a newspaper's headline.
