Ready Or Not Movie Review: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody And Andie MacDowell Put Up A Brutal, Barbaric And 'Bloody' Crazy Show!
Ready or Not, starring Samara Weaving, Andie MacDowell, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Henry Czerny, Melanie Scrofano, Kristian Bruun and more releases on September 13. The film is a dark comedy and here's our review of the same.
Just when you least expect a film to leave an impact, it does the deed oh so well. As for Ready or Not, Halloween couldn't have come earlier! Often gory dramas and thrillers are not enjoyed by a wide range of audience. It is as niche as niche can be. However, for those who like watching veins being cut, blood-spattered and organs flying about in the air, Ready Or Not should be your next film to devour. Oops, we seem to have given out the verdict already for the film! But don't depart just yet. Read on to find out what about the film got us laughing, covering our eyes and screaming!
The plot of Ready or Not revolves around a simple Grace's wedding night turning into a topsy turvy game of survival. The film begins with Grace (Samara Weaving) smoking a cigarette, telling herself how she can't wait to marry the love of her life, Alex Le Domas, and be part of his luxurious wealth and f**ked up family. Her words, not us. Alex (Mark O'Brien) also cannot wait to get married to Grace and leave his messy family behind him. Despite several disapprovals from the family, the two do get married in an intimate but lavish fashion in the Le Domas castle. It Was Important to Me to Have a Normal Life, Says Andie MacDowell
As the evening dawns upon them, the newlyweds want to get under the sheets but they have been summoned for there remains just one more tradition to follow. Play a game with the new member of the Le Domas family. Speaking of games, there are dirty bedroom games that you'd rather play with your husband on your wedding night. However, Grace's groom, Alex Le Domas wants his new bride to play hide and seek with his entire family. Sounds funny? Well, it gets super dark as the more she stays hidden from their gaze, the better it is for the Le Domas' survival.

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the film is a total riot! The brilliant balance brought forth from the theme of scene being serene to serious to the mood turning happy to grim is all done so wonderfully. You kind of get irritated by Grace's impish giggle as she assumes to have been accepted in the family, in the start. Ten minutes into the film, her smile vanishes and so does the impression she made of being silly. The script has been penned down by Ryan Murphy and Guy Busick and if I could meet them, I would kneel. Sometimes movies don't need to have any purpose but just some asinine shots that could later become guilty pleasures. Same goes for Ready or Not.
The entire cast has done a good job, especially Andie MacDowell as the Morticia Addams-inspired mother Becky Le Domas and Melanie Scrofano as Emilie, Alex's coked-up sister. They really bring the humour into the picture while others scurry around looking for the prey. This one scene where Emilie keeps shooting the wrong target and stuffs her nose to "focus" and "get it right" is downright hilarious!
Yays
- Crazy awesome script and direction
- Entertaining throughout
- Lovely balance between comedy and seriousness
- Perfect ending to the film
- Andie MacDowell and Melanie Scrofano ace their roles
- Very gory, especially the cattle-shed scene
Nays
- A few portions stretched a wee-bit much
Final Word
This movie is really adult so do not take your kids along with you. And if you don't fancy watching carcass flying in the air or casual ripping of throat and skin then best avoid the film. As for the ones who enjoy everything I just mentioned, don't think twice, just go watch it!
