This controversy is not going to be forgotten any time soon. Green Book had received a lot of flak when it came out, after the kin of Don Shirley, the jazz pianist's whose life the movie is based on, said that it was not true to real-life events. While it is a very feel-good film, Green Book's multiple nominations in various award shows, including the Oscars, was met with scepticism. However, fans were happy with Mahershala Ali's Best Supporting Actor win in the film. But at 91st Academy Awards, Green Book also went on to win Best Original Screenplay and above all, Best Picture! Spike Lee was visibly angry when "Green Book" was announced as the winner of best picture at the Oscars, waving his arms in disgust and appearing to try to storm out of the Dolby Theatre before he was stopped at the doors. He returned to his seat when the speeches were over.

When the family of Don Shirley, Mahershala Ali's character in The Green Book, disavows the movie and says it's filled with a "symphony" of "hurtful lies." I mean, maybe we should all step back for a second and pay attention. Just saying. Oh well, glad racism is solved. #Oscars

we're going to see films like this get continually rewarded and celebrated by white audiences because creating and viewing films like Green Book makes them feel as if they performed some act of anti-racism.

With these kinds of reactions, Green Book joins some of the other controversial Best Picture winners like Shakespeare in Love and Crash, who were also derided for winning over better films.
