In a first move of sorts, the Academy has announced four category awards which will be presented during the commercial break during the 91st Oscars to be held on February 24. This move has come as a surprise and enraged many fans considering it implies certain categories are being downgraded. The categories included in this list are cinematography, film editing, live-action short and make-up and hairstyling.
According to the announcement, the winners' speeches will be aired after the commercial break. The four award presentations will be available online. This is also the first time the Academy will be live-streaming the ceremony on Oscar.com and Academy's social channels.
The Academy has to come to a decision to choose four to six different categories that will be selected on a rotational basis to be presented in the commercial break spot. A video demonstration of the new format was shown to various branches and only after receiving an approval have they announced a new format. The Academy has been changing several things in order to maintain a run-time that is suitable for the audience and wish to keep it well within three hours. The Academy has also announced that this year's show will include performances of all five nominated songs.
