Oscars 2018: 'The Shape of Water' Wins the Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards
The Shape of Water had also won best film at the Critics’ Choice awards and the Producers Guild awards.
The Shape of Water has high expectations and has stayed true to them at the Oscars 2018. The film directed by Guillermo del Toro had the highest number of nominations and was definitely a strong contender to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The Shape of Water has won the Best Picture along with the Best Director Award. The award was presented by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. The film also took the awards for Best Production Design and Best Score.
The Shape of Water was set at the time of a cold-war, a fantasy thriller which starred Sally Hawkins. She played the character of a mute cleaning woman who discovers a bizarre aquatic-human hybrid in a tank at a secret government lab. The Mexican film-maker Guillermo del Toro got his first nomination for the Best Picture category. While receiving his award he said, “I want to dedicate this to the young film-makers; the youth who are showing [us] how things are done.”
The Shape of Water had also won best film at the Critics’ Choice awards and the Producers Guild awards. It had a tough competition from the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which had 8 nominations in the awards. Frances McDormand although took the award for the Best Actress for this one. Gary Oldman won the award for Best Actor for his film Darkest Hour. The Shape of Water was a much-expected win and fans are happy to see the film get the deserving honours. Host Jimmy Kennel began the show very well and hosted the event for the second time in a row. In the opening, he also addressed last year's fiasco when the name of the wrong film was announced as Best Picture winner. Gender equality was an important topic which was addressed on the night. The #MeToo movement took center stage. Along with that the issue of Gun Safety was also advocated by wearing orange pins from advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety was being worn in an effort to raise awareness about gun safety.
