Born as Farrukh Bulsara, Freddie Mercury paved way for flamboyance in rock as the celebrated singer and songwriter of the British band Queen. With Parsi roots from Mumbai to becoming Freddie in Middlesex, the vocalist's contribution to the field of music was phenomenal! Even now, a Queen song can make people feel things they've never felt before and found it relatable to their lives.
He died in 1991, 27 years from now, by succumbing to bronchial pneumonia which was caused by AIDS. He was posthumously awarded the Brit awards for his Outstanding Contribution to the British Music industry. Several tribute concerts have been held since. In fact, his bandmates, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon even opened a trust called The Mercury Phoenix Trust that aims to spread awareness regarding AIDS. Taking today's day, several Twitter users have used Freddie's death anniversary to once again, talk about the disease that has taken several lives and continues to due to lack of awareness.
As we remember the celebrated singer and songwriter, here are some of his best contributions with Queen! I know, it's tough to single out the ten best songs out of so many of their brilliant tracks. However, these ones have had the most impact on our lives.
#1 Bohemian Rhapsody
No doubt there. The six-minute song might not have been any producer's first choice to be played on the radio but here we are going Scaramouche over it!
#2 Under Pressure
The only song that is highly relatable in today's time and Queen figured it out back in the past already! Plus, the collab with David Bowie didn't fall on their face!
#3 Fat Bottomed Girls
The most random song about fat bottomed women but who's complaining?
#4 We Will Rock You
Conceptualised by Brian May, the short and sweet song is to the point and easy to sing along!
#5 Killer Queen
Killer Queen guaranteed to blow minds and it definitely did thanks to May's lyrical guitar style teamed with Freddie's vocals.
#6 We Are The Champions
One of the catchiest songs from the band, its balladic verses and anthemic chorus became the go-to karaoke number.
#7 Crazy Little Thing Called Love
A little fact here - Freddie wrote this song while taking a bubble bath in his room during his stay at the Munich Hilton, Germany. And it took him only 5 to 10 minutes to shape the song!
#8 Another One Bites The Dust
Penned down by the band's bassist John Deacon, the song, with its funk bass riff and Freddie's manic vocals, didn't take time to becoome an instant hit in 17 countries!
#9 Radio Ga Ga
Thanks to Roger Taylor's toddler son, the original idea for Radio Caca was conceived which eventually became Radio Gaga, another great hit which Mercury sang on his last concert in 1986's Live Aid.
#10 I Want To Break Free
A controversial son, to begin with, the song was initially banned by MTV for it's "salacious" content as all the band members cross-dressed.
Sure, Freddie's life was full of controversies thanks to his flamboyant lifestyle and four-octave vocal range, not to mention his personal life choices and sexuality, everything became fodder to the media back in the 1980s. But everything said and done, Freddie was the best thing to happen to this world!
