Mission Impossible Fallout has been called the best action film in recent times and rightly so. The sixth instalment in the Mission Impossible franchise has impressed both the critics and the fans alike with some relentless, well-executed stunts and action scenes, and of course, lead star Tom Cruise's mind-boggling dedication and performance. Christopher McQuarrie proves once again his blockbuster chops with Fallout, after directing the fifth instalment, Rogue Nation.
Mission Impossible Fallout has been doing incredible business both in Indian and worldwide. In India itself, the movie has managed to collect more than Rs 50 crore over four days in the opening week. While the fans have been going gaga over the action scenes, Fallout has much more going for it than just stunts. If you have observed closely, the movie has some brilliant moments of foreshadowing and callbacks to previous movies, done in a very smart way. Like these five moments below,
People ignoring Walker's intro
That Henry Cavill being the mastermind John Lark was a twist so obviously given out by the trailers. However, the movie smartly plays into this fact by giving us clues beforehand. Whenever Cavill tries to introduce himself as Walker, he often gets snubbed by the other person. First, it happens with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and then with Benji (Simon Pegg). It's as if the movie wants us to disregard this identity of his.
White Widow's parentage
The Crown's Vanessa Kirby made an alluring impression as the black-market arms dealer, White Widow. But did you know that she has a past connection with Ethan Hunt? Her mother, Max, played by Vanessa Redgrave, was also an arms dealer who appeared in the first Mission: Impossible movie. Though Fallout didn't make their relationship much obvious, the hints were strewn throughout.
Hunt crashing into Ilsa Faust
Hunt and Faust's sometimes-rivals, sometimes-friends arc was beautifully defined through Rogue Nation and now Fallout. There is an interesting diversion in how Hunt tackles Faust in both movies. In Rogue Nation, remember the scene where Hunt chases Ilsa on a bike? After much chasing, she suddenly stands in the middle of the road, causing Hunt to suddenly swerve and crash in order to avoid hitting her.
In Fallout, exactly the opposite happens. Here, Faust chases Hunt and a captive Solomon Lane (an excellent Sean Harris) in Paris on a bike to kill the latter. When they confront each other, after a second of hesitation, Hunt rams his car into her bike, though that doesn't leave her with any major injury.
Benji wearing the mask (twice)
Benji has been complaining in the past two movies about how he doesn't get to do much on the field and how much he wants to try the masks. So in Fallout, not only does he gets be in the middle of the action at times, he is the only character who dons rubber masks. Not once, but twice for some really surprising twists. That number makes up for the number of movies he has complained before.
The cliff-hanger
One of the best scenes in Mission Impossible 2 was Ethan Hunt climbing a mountain with his bare hands.
That exercise sure came to his aid four movies later when he was hanging on the side of another cliff, clinging to his dear life, in the climax of Fallout!
Not just that, the first rubber mask scene in Fallout is a callback to a similar scene in MI-2, while the second rubber mask scene mirrors how Hunt traps Claire Phelps in the first MI movie.
