Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 to Cast Oscar-Nominated Jake Gyllenhaal as Villain
Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, produced by Sony and Marvel, is set for July 5, 2019.
Despite what the ending of Avengers: Infinity War might suggest, Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is on, and it has already fixated on the star to play the main nemesis of the popular web crawler. Marvel is in talks with the Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal to take on the role of the main antagonist in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, which is scheduled to release in 2019. This piece of casting also confirms the fact that Tom Holland's version of Spider-Man will somehow manage to return from the dead, after being snapped out of existence by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
Though it has not yet been confirmed as which villain he will be playing in the movie, there are speculations that Jake Gyllenhaal will be donning the suit of Mysterio. In the comics, Mysterio is an alias used by several villains, the most notable being Quentin Beck, who is a special effects wizard and uses his tech wizardry to harass Spider-Man. Earlier, Gyllenhaal was one of the actors considered to play Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man series before Andrew Garfield took over. He was also rumoured to be in the lead to play Venom in the spinoff, that Tom Hardy is now playing. If Gyllenhaal is confirmed, then this would be his first official superhero project.
Interestingly, Michael Keaton's The Vulture, the villain from the first Homecoming movie, is also making a return for the sequel, apart from Marisa Tomei's Aunt May and Zendaya's MJ. Jon Watts will be returning as the director, and the makers are also looking for a new face for the female lead.
