There is a saying that 'diamond cuts diamond'. Well, when it comes to the superhero business, we have to say that in the current state of things, only Marvel can cut Marvel. While we are eagerly waiting for the release of Avengers: Infinity War (why is April 27 still looking so far a date?), Marvel's last box office release Black Panther has been quietly breaking all records at the box office when it comes to the superhero genre. A few hours back, it has been reported that the movie has grossed over $631 million at the North American box office, thus making it the highest grossing superhero movie of all time there.
In the process, Black Panther has beaten the likes of Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($619m) and The Avengers ($623m) at the domestic box office. It now holds the record of being the fifth highest box office earner in North America, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($937m), Avatar ($760m), Titanic ($658m) and Jurassic World ($652m). Trade experts are of the belief that Black panther could easily beat Titanic and Jurassic World and take the third position, however, beating Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a really long shot, especially with Infinity War coming in.
However, Black Panther's five-week streak of holding the first position at the North American box office was broken last week, when Pacific Rim Uprising toppled it from the first position. Worldwide, Black Panther has grossed around $1.237 billion, taking the 12 position in the highest grossers and beating Fate of the Furious ($1.236 billion) in the process. Avatar holds the top position here.
All in all, it is a pretty good place if you are in the Marvel campaign.
Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Chadwick Boseman in the lead.
