‘Longlegs’: Did FBI Catch a Real Serial Killer Inside Theatre Screening Nicolas Cage’s Horror-Thriller? Netizens Debunk Viral Video Claiming It’s From 2017 – WATCH!
Longlegs, releasing worldwide on July 12, seems to have even captured the attention of a real killer. Or that's what a viral video claims. Alas, that's not exactly the truth!
Osgood Perkins's horror-thriller Longlegs is about a rookie FBI trying to apprehend a terrifying serial killer called Longlegs. While Maika Monroe plays the FBI agent, the great Nicolas Cage plays the serial killer. In what seems to be a case of real-life aping reel-life, or so the claim goes, an X under who goes by the handle @WreckinRod claimed that when they attended an early screening of the movie, it had to be halted by the FBI because apparently a real serial killer took a break and came to the theatre to watch the movie. The handle posted a video captured from outside the theatre, but it shows the cops chasing someone inside the theatre. The video went viral and instantly captured people's attention, with some even comparing the situation to another upcoming film, M Night Shayamalan's Trap. For the unaware, Trap is about a serial killer who attends a pop concert with his daughter only to find that the cops have surrounded the venue.

So, is this case of a real-life Trap happening at the screening of another serial killer film? Or a hoax? Well, to say it bluntly, the video doesn't seem to corroborate the claim, as quite a few netizens pointed out. ‘Trap’: M Night Shyamalan’s Upcoming Thriller Inspired by Real-Life Sting Operation.
Many claimed that if the incident happened at a theatre that was screening a movie that's coming out in 2024, why the posters in the theatre are from the movies that came out in 2017. Even though they appear as a blur, it could easily be discerned that two of the posters are of Logan and Wonder Woman, both 2017 movies. Also the cut-out belonged to Kong: Skull Island, also a 2017 movie. So, most likely, the vial video is also from the same year, and not of any recent event.
With more and more netizens pointing this out, a Community Notes was added to the above post, surmising the aforementioned discrepancies.
Even NEON, the production company who is distributing Longlegs in USA, seems to have fallen for the allegedly fake video.
While we are not sure what exactly is the context of the video - some even pointed out that there are no FBI agents, just local cops - it certainly is not what the user has been claiming.
Longlegs, meanwhile, is releasing worldwide on July 12, 2024. The movie has received positive early reviews from critics, with particular praise for Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage's performances.
