Joaquin Phoenix's DC film, Joker, has shattered records and won hearts worldwide. The movie directed by Todd Phillips was the origin story of Batman's archnemesis, Joker. Fans were not prepared for how awesome it was. And fans are probably not prepared for what the director has revealed now about the film either. Turns out, the Joker origin story might not be a Joker origin story at all. Yes, we might have just lapped up on to a story about a random dude in a mental institution prone to hallucinations. Usually, such far-fetched theories come from fans on Reddit. But this time around, the theory has come from the director himself. Joker Movie Review: Joaquin Phoenix Redefines This Iconic DC Villain With a Beautifully Disturbing Tale.

Actually, that has always been the thing about Joker's origin. The Clown Prince Of Crime has always maintained multiple stories of how he came to be. In Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger's Joker gives out various versions of how he got his scars during the course of the film. Same was the case in the graphic novel, The Killing Joke, where Joker had multiple origin stories.

In the blockbuster 2019 film, Joker, Joaquin Phoenix plats Arthur Fleck, a wannabe stand-up comedian. The 80s is a not a great time to live in Gotham, especially for the underprivileged. Arthur suffers from mental health problems. He loses his sanity, insult by insult, day by day, and adapts his alter-ego Joker. Joaquin Phoenix Walks Off from an Interview When Asked Will ‘Joker’ Encourage People to Become Violent.

Director Todd Phillips talked about the possibility of Phoenix's Joker being faux in Joker: Vision & Fury, a 22-minute behind-the-scenes featurette included on the home release special features.

"There's many ways to look at the movie. He might not be Joker," he said. "This is just a version of a Joker origin. It's just the version this guy is telling in this room at a mental institution. I don't know that he's the most reliable narrator in the world, you know what I'm saying?"

Well, that leaves a lot to think about. What if we get an entirely different origin story in the upcoming sequel to Joker? Everything will be turned on its head. And, honestly, it will be awesome.
