Joaquin Phoenix's Joker will hit the screens on October 2, 2019, but I was among the few fortunate ones who was able to watch it at the pre-screening. Of course, my hopes were pinned very high and the thought of it disappointing me didn't even cross my mind. The movie is simply brilliant and hats off to Todd Phillips and Joaquin for making it a riveting affair. It takes you inside the mind of DC's most notorious and evil villain and coerces you to imagine the world from his point of view. Joker Movie Review: Joaquin Phoenix Redefines This Iconic DC Villain With a Beautifully Disturbing Tale.
A movie where you see a villain getting celebrated for his deeds or where you see him getting tagged as a 'messiah' is rare to find in the history of filmmaking. But Phillips makes this impossible task look possible and also very convincing. Joker as the face of the oppressed in the city of Gotham is the reason why Batman had to eventually rise. There are too many distinguished scenes throughout its two-hour runtime and it's really difficult to pick the top five among them. Yet, I tried and here they are. Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara Make an Elegant Couple at 'Joker' Premiere.
When Joker Meets Bruce Wayne
Yes, they do meet each other under different circumstances. Arthur Fleck (Joker) is under the assumption that Thomas Wayne (Bruce Wayne's father) is his father. He goes to meet his biological dad at his mansion where he sees little Bruce playing in the park. The duo comes face-to-face when Arthur offers to show Bruce some of his magic tricks. This was future Batman and Joker's first-ever interaction - while Wayne was confused, Fleck was friendly.
Where he Embraces his Joker Avatar
It's shortly after the scene when he realises that his own mother is in a way responsible for his mental disorder and she lied to him throughout his childhood. Arthur Fleck is about to embrace his new identity and his process is filled with madness. From picking the iconic red and yellow suit (that match the walls of Arkham asylum) to dyeing his hair green, you know the Joker is on his way and there's no way of stopping him now.
When he kills Robert De Niro's Character
Joker movie probably has the best climax scene of recent times. It's beautifully disturbing and well-executed. When Arthur Fleck aka Joker gets invited to the late-night comedy show hosted by Robert De Niro's character, little do we know about what's cooking in his head. It's after he takes his place on-stage and has a terrifying discussion with De Niro that he shoots him point-blank in front of a live audience. I had goosebumps after watching this daunting scene.
When Crowd Celebrates his Madness
Shortly after he kills Robert De Niro, the entire city of Gotham is unraged with riots. Oppressed in the city are celebrating Joker for his ability to stand up against the rich in the society and they even agree with his ways. The scene where he gets up on a car and starts dancing while the crowd continues to cheer for him is intense and terrifying.
His interaction with Psychiatrist
It's right at the beginning of the movie when the director makes us aware of his mental disorder. He has uncrottable fits of laughter and there's nothing he can do to help himself. But those scenes are simply brilliant and Phoenix does a stellar job in conveying that his laughter is not his way of mocking at people but he's genuinely helpless and suffers from a condition.
Joker is a worthy of an Oscar win next year. It's disturbing but so well executed. While Heath Ledger will forever be etched in our minds as the best Joker of all time, we are willing to let Joquin share this title. He makes you feel uneasy in a way that's hard to shrug. Hopefully, the movie will get its due worth with the box office success and few Academy wins.
