Quite a lot of fans were predicting it and were hoping for it. Joaquin Phoenix has bagged the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his role in the film, Joker. This is the second time an actor has bagged a Golden Globe for playing the role of DC villain on screen. In 2009, Heath Ledger was honoured posthumously with Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Joker in The Dark Knight. Coming back to Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, the movie opened to rave reviews in 2019. So, it hardly comes as a surprise that Joaquin Phoenix actually picked up the trophy for Best Actor. This is the second time the actor is winning the Golden Globe in this category. In 2006, he took home the award for his role in Walk the LineGolden Globes 2020: Awkwafina Wins Best Actress Award For 'The Farewell', Becomes First East Asian Individual To Bag The Trophy.

Dressed sharply, looking suave, in a black suit, Joaquin Phoenix took the opportunity to call out Hollywood during his acceptance speech. His words was so razor sharp that most of it was muted for TV audience, Twitterati have complained. He dropped quite a few F-bombs in his speech. “We all know there’s no f—ing competition between us,” he said addressing other nominees. “I’m your f—ing student. I can’t believe the beautiful mesmerizing, unique work that you’ve all done this year, but I really do feel honored to be mentioned with you.”

The actor also thanked the organisers for keeping the menu meat free at the event and addressed climate change. "Hopefully, we can be unified and actually make some changes. It's great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives, we don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards," he said, but was cut off by the music before he could finish his speech.
