Golden Globe Awards 2019: Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, A Star Is Born, Black Panther – 5 Surprise Winners and 5 Biggest Losers of This Year’s Ceremony.

Golden Globe Awards 2019, the first Hollywood award ceremony of this year is done away with, and it has been a very unpredictable affair. Yes, some of the favourites like Roma and Christian Bale (Vice) did take away the trophies, but did anyone expect Green Book to win so many awards? Or Glenn Close would best hot favourites like Nicole Kidman (Destroyer) and Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) to take away the Best Actress award in the category - 'Motion Picture - Drama'? Golden Globe Awards 2019 Complete Winners List: Bohemian Rhapsody, Roma, Christian Bale, Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan Win Big!

Naturally, this year's edition has left Twitterati asking each other, 'what just happened there?'. Of course, Golden Globes aren't Oscars, they have been known to field some very left-hand choices in the past. And it makes the ceremony so interesting to watch when our purported winning candidates don't walk away with the trophies. So let's go back to the event, and look at five biggest surprise wins and 5 biggest snubs at the Golden Globes 2019. Golden Globe Awards 2019 Best Of Red Carpet: Nicole Kidman, Lady Gaga, Sandra Oh, Julia Roberts Look Drop Dead Gorgeous!

Surprise Winners

Bohemian Rhapsody

Wins: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Bohemian Rhapsody, the 'Queen' singer Freddie Mercury biopic, was a huge hit at the box office. However, it didn't get raving reviews from the critics, who called it a 'by the numbers' biopic that played safe with Mercury's life. That hasn't stopped the GG2019 from choosing the film over BlacKkKlansman, A Star is Born and Black Panther as the Best Film. Rami Malek even got the Best Actor award over Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman).

Green Book

Wins: Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, Best Screenplay - Motion Picture

Green Book is a good movie, but is it better than Vice and The Favourite to win the 'Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy' award? That's the question that many on social media are asking. Not just that, it even won the Best Screenplay award beating the likes of Roma, Vice and The FavouriteGreen Book Movie Review: Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali Drive Through Racial Biases in This Endearing Road Trip Dramedy.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Wins: Best Motion Picture - Animated

Actually, we are happy that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the award. It is not only the best animated film of the year, but also one of the best superhero movies in recent times. We are actually surprised that the Golden Globes jury saw what we saw and chose it over the Disney pusher Incredibles 2.

The Americans

Wins: Best Television Series - Drama

The spy thriller show, having concluded its sixth season last year, continues to wow juries still now even though it has faced some very tough competition in Homecoming and Killing Eve.

Richard Madden

Wins: Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama

You may know Madden for his role of the slain prince Robb Stark in the HBO series Game of Thrones. While he was too good in Bodyguard, did anyone expect him to snatch a win away from the likes of Jason Bateman (Ozark) and Mathew Rhys (The Americans)?

Biggest Losers

A Star is Born

Nominated for: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director - Motion Picture, Best Original Song - Motion Picture

Won: Best Original Song - Motion Picture

The biggest snub of the ceremony was how a perennial favourite like A Star is Born only went away with one trophy. While we may agree with most of the other losses for the film, Lady Gaga losing out Best Actress award to Glenn Close (for The Wife) was a true shocker. Golden Globe Awards 2019: Lady Gaga’s Reaction on Losing Out Best Actress Trophy to Glenn Close Is Priceless – Watch Video.

BlacKkKlansman

Nominated For: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, Best Director - Motion Picture

Won: None

This Spike Lee black comedy on racism, based on real-life events, was one of the best films of last year from Hollywood. Yet, it didn't win a single award in the four categories that it was nominated in. And to think, Green Book was an eventual winner in some of them!

Black Panther

Nominated For: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Original Score - Motion Picture, Best Original Song - Motion Picture

Won: None

Was Black Panther the best superhero film of 2018? No. Still, it managed to get itself nominated in most of the award ceremonies, mainly for being the biggest inter-cultural blockbuster of 2018. However, it wasn't impressive enough to get an award for itself.

Homecoming

Nominated For: Best Television Series - Drama, Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama, Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama

Won: None

This Amazon Prime series, starring THE Julia Roberts, was one of the best reviewed new shows of last year. It wasn't enough for the jury to even give one award to the show.

Amy Adams

Nominated For: Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Won: None

The supremely talented and always-likeable Amy Adams was nominated for two acting categories for her performances in Vice and the series, Sharp Objects. She went away home empty-handed, leaving us disappointed.
