Just like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Legendary Films and Warner Bros are also creating a unique universe involving monsters. The MonsterVerse, as the fans like to call it, began its expansion with the 2014 film Godzilla. It was the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island that confirmed that a universe was in the play with Kong and Godzilla, along with other Titans. Now we have Godzilla: King of the Monsters that is a direct sequel to the 2014 film. Godzilla: King of the Monsters Movie Review: The Mighty Titans Get Bogged Down by a Dumb Plot and Dumber Humans!

The movie is directed by Michael Dougherty and brings three new kaiju in the MonsterVerse. So we have Godzilla lug it out with Rodan, Mothra and his biggest enemy of them all - the three-headed King Ghidorah. (HUGE SPOILERS begin from here) Actually, make it two, since Mothra is on Godzilla's side, though the beautiful monster dies trying to take down Ghidorah in the final battle.

Towards the end of the film, Godzilla destroys King Ghidorah and retrieves the title of being the 'alpha' of the Titans on Earth. As the surviving humans leave the place, Bradley Whitford's Dr Rick Stanton heaves a sigh of relief exclaiming how it is good that they have Godzilla on their side.

To which, Zhang Ziyi's Dr Ilene Chen replies, 'For now'! On this ominous note, the human see the other Titans, including an injured Rodan, approach Godzilla and bow to him in a Godfather-like reverence before the end-credits come in. This gives us a hint to where the next chapter in the MonsterVerse will head to, which is Godzilla vs Kong.

The movie, set to release in 2020, has King Kong come out of Skull Island and take on Godzilla, who now has his own battalion. As to how a might ape with no specific powers will beat a giant lizard with a nuclear breath, is something we have no clue about! However, the existence of King Kong and Skull Island is mentioned several times in the film. Though Kong doesn't appear physically in the movie, we see many glimpses of Skull Island in various footage shown. The movie also hints that there could be other Titans on Skull Island apart from Kong.

Then comes in the credits sequence, where, if we pay attention to the various headlines, we get to know what the Titans have been doing all over the world. In between, the movie also takes us on an aerial tour to Skull Island before it ends on a cave painting that has Godzilla and King Kong charging at each other. As if the title, Godzilla vs Kong title wasn't enough!

So when the post-credit scene (yes, there is one!) arrives, we expect to see King Kong there, or have some hint about him. Like how the below post-credit scene of Kong: Skull Island told us about the existence of Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah in Kong's world.

But the scene that we get to see subverts our expectations.

The Post Credit Scene

Instead, we have Colonel Alan Jonah (Charles), the eco-terrorist who has been helping Dr Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) to unleash the Titans on Earth, goes with his team to an underground bunker where they find one of the severed heads of King Ghidorah (after his fatal battle with Godzilla). Jonah then tells the person who led them there that he will take the head for himself. Now, will he be using the head to resuscitate King Ghidorah (since the Titan has regenerative powers)? Or will Jonah make an entirely new monster?

Whatever the case may be, it looks like Godzilla vs Kong is heading the Batman V Superman way, where the eponymous protagonists fight with each other at the start, before they join hands and battle a bigger foe!
