Furiosa A Mad Max Saga Ending Explained: The Fan-Pleasing Cameo, End-Credits, and How Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth's Film Leads to 'Fury Road'! (SPOILER ALERT)
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, directed by George Miller, is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, and has its events leading up to the 2015 film, while serving as an original story for the hardened titular character.
Nine years after the blockbuster success of Mad Max: Fury Road, legendary director George Miller returns to the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland with its prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This film focuses on a younger Furiosa, with Anya Taylor-Joy stepping into the role previously played by Charlize Theron, who was outstanding in Fury Road. We discover how Furiosa was abducted from her homeland, the Green Place of Many Mothers, by the biker horde of Dementus, the main antagonist played by Chris Hemsworth, and how she ends up working for Immortan Joe. Furiosa - A Mad Max Saga Movie Review: Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth’s Film Is an Exhilarating Wild, Wild Ride Not to Be Missed!
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is crafted in the same style as Mad Max: Fury Road but is divided into chapters depicting different stages of Furiosa's adolescence and youth, and how they play in her quest for revenge. As it leads into Mad Max: Fury Road, several characters from the latter also appear, including the primary antagonist Immortan Joe, his sadistic sons, and his War Boys. There's also a cameo to delight fans.
While it's clear that Furiosa, Immortan Joe, and his sons will survive, as they all appear in Mad Max: Fury Road, the fate of other characters remains uncertain. In this SPOILER-filled feature, we explore how Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga develops its protagonist's story, shaping her into the character we see in Fury Road.
Does Mad Max Appear in the Film?
Yes, although his character is never referred to as 'Mad Max' or Max Rockatansky. He appears in a non-speaking, single-scene cameo, played by Jacob Tomuri, Tom Hardy's stuntman in Fury Road. Tomuri also doubled for Hardy in Legend, The Revenant, and Venom.
Mad Max is seen when Furiosa, after escaping from Dementus' capture and leaving her injured arm behind, collapses from fatigue and blood loss while walking through the desert. A wide shot shows a man standing on a cliffside watching her. It's clear from his clothes and iconic GT Falcon car that this is Mad Max. It's presumed that he later drops Furiosa near The Citadel, though he isn't seen again until the montage in the end credits showing events from Fury Road, where Tom Hardy reprises the role. Who Dies By the End of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?
Praetorian Jack, Immortan Joe's transport commander and Furiosa's confidant and possible lover, is tortured to death by Dementus' gang after an ambush at Bullet Farm, with Furiosa forced to watch. After Furiosa reaches The Citadel, she informs Immortan Joe of Dementus' plan to use a decoy to capture The Citadel, leading to a 40-day war that kills many of Dementus' men.
Later, Furiosa enters the fray herself, cutting her hair and fitting an artificial limb to replace her amputated hand. She kills the remaining of Dementus' men and finally confronts Dementus, torturing him while he taunts her for becoming like him in her quest for revenge. Furiosa contemplates his fate, realising that he is quite welcoming of being killed by her.
Is Dementus Killed By Furiosa?
The narrator, the History Man (George Shevtsov), who has switched sides from Dementus to Immortan Joe, reveals that people speculate about Dementus' fate. Some believe Furiosa shot him or mutilated him to death, but the narrator claims Furiosa told him the true story.
In the bowels of The Citadel, Furiosa uses a still-alive but emaciated Dementus as soil for a peach tree she has grown, a horrifying fate worse than death. Furiosa is seen plucking a peach from the tree before meeting Immortan Joe's wives.
Why Wasn't Furiosa A Wife to Immortan Joe?
In Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa says she was one of Immortan Joe's wives but was demoted to general because she was infertile. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga alters this backstory slightly. As a child, she was sold to Immortan Joe by Dementus to be groomed as a future child-bearer, but she escaped that night itself after avoiding assault by Rictus Erectus.
When Immortan Joe meets the grown Furiosa, her lost arm makes her unsuitable as a child-bearer who he prefers to be a 'perfect' looking woman. He likely makes Furiosa his general after she helps him defeat Dementus and his gang. Does Furiosa Reach Her Homeland?
Furiosa's goal is to return to the Green Place, but she doesn't achieve this in the prequel. She loses the coordinates tattooed on her arm, which she amputates to escape Dementus' binds.
In Mad Max: Fury Road, she finally reaches her homeland, only to find it turned into a swamp, and her tribe, the Vuvalini, is reduced to seven survivors. By the end of Fury Road, with Mad Max's help, Furiosa takes control of The Citadel, making it her new home after defeating Immortan Joe and his men.
How Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Leads to Mad Max: Fury Road
After Dementus' presumed grisly fate, Furiosa enters Immortan Joe's wives' chamber. She interacts with the five women - Toast, Capable, the Dag, Cheedo, and the pregnant Angharad - and leads them to a war rig, setting the stage for the events of Fury Road, where she helps them escape during a supply run.
These events are shown in the end credits of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, featuring footage from Mad Max: Fury Road.
Is There An End-Credits Scene?
There are no end-credit scenes hinting at further expansions of the Mad Max universe. Instead, scenes from Mad Max: Fury Road play during the end credits. While this doesn't rule out George Miller's return to the Wasteland, it suggests he isn't setting up anything new just yet.
