Deadline: Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.When the time came to make this prequel they already had the goods, and it was up to the casting to bring it to life. In this regard Miller hit a bull’s-eye, not just with Hemsworth and Taylor-Joy but also the brilliant Burke, who nails Praetorian Jack with abandon. Browne as the younger Furiosa is also extraordinary in a role that is much more than just a gateway for Taylor-Joy to take over. The large and colorful supporting cast is so much fun to watch including Hulme who not only plays The Immortan Joe, but also in full regalia as Rizzdale Pell. Matuse as Fang and Goran Kleut as Oct-Boss make the most of their time, as does the exceptional Charlee Fraser as badass Mary Jabasa, who takes matters into her own hands early on. Furiosa – A Mad Max Saga: George Miller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Chris Hemsworth Receive Nearly Eight-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes 2024 (Watch Video).

IGN: The biggest surprise up the director’s sleeve: Despite all its violence – the man quartered by revving motorbikes, the woman tortured at the stake – the driving force of Furiosa is love. The protagonist yearning for her motherland, her unexpected connection with Praetorian Jack, even Dementus’ impulses to rule as he does all spring from a vast emotional landscape. With that, Miller expertly shows us that when we fight for love, we must be prepared for the side effects and consequences. For Dementus and Immortan Joe it’s the thirst for power; for Furiosa, it’s the shedding of who she knows herself to be.

Gamesradar: Is Furiosa as magnificent as Fury Road? No, though not because it’s the first Mad Max movie without Max, whose absence barely registers. At 140 minutes minus credits, it’s a touch unwieldy, while its lament for the inevitability of war and the emptiness of revenge feels hollow given the giddy excitement it stirs from just these things. But what can’t be disputed is that Miller, the Mad genius, has done it again, once more refusing to simply repeat himself and instead choosing to kick up dust rather than gather it as he forges a new path through the Wasteland in often spectacular fashion. Oh, what a day. What a lovely day.
