Emma Stone is a two-time Oscar winner now and is considered a very serious actress. Once upon a time, though, Emma Stone was a favourite among teen audiences and was known for her roles in romcoms and superhero movies. The actress, while having done bold roles in the past, like in Gangster Squad and Easy A, had always shied away from taking on roles that needed to show nudity. She first went nude in their 2018 film The Favourite, a period black comedy, which also earned Emma an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Their next film together, Poor Things (2023) had Stone go all out when it comes to nudity and sex scenes, and that netted her second Oscar win for Best Actress after previously grabbing the statue for La La Land. Finally, earlier this year, she went nude again in Kinds of Kindness, again made by Lanthimos. That's the level of comfort she shares or the confidence she has in the filmmaker, where she knows that nudity is the requirement of the character and not for gratuitous purposes.
The Favourite
Emma Stone shocked her fans when she first went nude in this period saga. It is a quirky black comedy with lesbian themes, where the ailing queen, played by Olivia Colman (who won an Oscar here), has a clandestine affair with her advisor and confidant (Rachel Weisz) and then chooses her scheming cousin, played by Stone, over her advisor as a new lover. Poor Things
Yorgos Lanthimos went even more bizarre with his second collaboration with Emma in this reimagining of Frankenstein's tale. Emma Stone plays Bella, a woman reanimated through the corpse of a dead woman who but has the intellect of a new born baby trying to discover the world in her redefined adulthood. Her sexual awakening is also a part of her coming of age, as Bella goes on various sexual trysts with various men and even becomes a prostitute for a brief time. Be warned, there's plenty of nudity here, and the sex scenes aren't the gallery-pleasing types. Poor Things is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. Kinds of Kindness
In their latest joint endeavour, Emma Stone plays three characters in Yorgos Lanthimos' loosely connected anthology featuring an ensemble cast. Like his previous films, there is plenty of nudity on display, with Emma Stone going nude in a foursome sex scene involving Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, and Mamoudou Athie. While Stone may not be going for an Oscar with this movie, Kinds of Kindness had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024, where Plemons won the Best Actor award. Kinds of Kindness will be released on VOD on August 27.
