Former publishing editor turned filmmaker Audrey Diwan returns to direction after the 2021 film Happening with what could be the sexiest film of 2024. Emmanuelle, the upcoming French film made in English, is a soft reboot of a very popular and softcore Emmanuelle series that was based on a novel by Emmanuelle Arsan. Emmanuelle stars Noémie Merlant in the titular lead, who is well-known to fans for her roles in the lesbian romantic drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the bizarre love story Jumbo, the crime-comedy The Innocent and a memorable supporting role in Tar. Apart from Merlant, the movie also stars Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, Chacha Huang, Anthony Wong and Jamie Campbell Bower. The first trailer of Emmanuelle dropped on July 2, 2024, and let's say it's quite an erotic affair. As per the synopsis, it is about Emmanuelle finding the lost pleasure in Hong Kong, and there are quite a few scenes in the trailer that suggest how she goes about it.

For those who are not aware of this, the Emmanuelle series is a franchise of about 14 films with seven theatrical releases. The first film came out in 1974 and starred Sylvia Kristel in the lead; it was a money-spinner for the makers. While the first film had softcore sex scenes, the subsequent movies ranged from softcore to hardcore. Apart from Kristel, the role was also played by Mia Nygren, Monique Gabrielle, Natalie Uher and Marcela Walerstein, with Noémie Merlant now joining the tribe. The new Emmanuelle movie is scheduled to release in France on September 25, 2024, after having its world premiere at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 20.
