Does Crank Have Most ‘Unnecessary Sex Scene in a Movie’? Netizens Defend Jason Statham-Amy Smart’s Public ‘Lovemaking’ Scene in 2006 Film! (Watch Video)
The 2006 film's most memorable scene was a love-making scene between Jason Statham and Amy Smart. But was it 'the most unnecessary sex scene in a movie'? Netizens end up in a furious debate over this.
Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's Crank, that came out in 2006, is a sci-fi action-thriller that has enjoyed a cult fanbase over the years. Starring Jason Statham in the lead, Crank is about a hitman who is injected with a drug that causes his heart to slow down, and his only way to survival is to keep his adrenaline pumping at an accelerated rate that would keep his heart rate up. The movie was a decent success at the box office, and it even got a sequel, Crank: High Voltage, that came in 2009, which had even crazier stakes. One of the most memorable scenes in Crank is a bizarre, comical lovemaking scene between Statham and Amy Smart's characters. Amy Smart plays the hero's girlfriend who tries to help him out in his pursuit to find the antidote to cure his poisoning. While on the run at a marketplace in Chinatown, Chev, Statham's character, finds his heart-rate dropping dangerously low. To save himself, he begins to have sex with his girlfriend in front of the bemused onlookers. The girlfriend, initially rebuffing his moves because of public exposure, also gives in to the act.
This scene is what an X handle called @everymovieplug termed 'most unnecessary sex scene in a movie' in a post. The post ended up inciting fans of the movie who defended the scene so much that even 'Community Notes' of X had to add the context here.
Even fans came out in support of the scene, saying it was crucial for the protagonist's survival at the point and goes well with the treatment of the movie.

'It Was Extremely Necessary'
To provide some interesting trivia about the scene: it was actually shot in a public place, and the reactions of the people watching the couple were real. Amy Smart used a body double for the parts where she had to appear nude. In a 2014 interview, actress Laura Grady, who worked as Amy's body double in Crank, called the scene the most fun moment of her career. She had said, "Jason Statham made me feel so comfortable. He didn't make me feel stupid or naked. And I had to be completely topless, and it was this crazy scene outside with all these background actors. But I was like, 'This is not a bad day. I'm taking my clothes off for Jason Statham. I'll be okay today.'"
