Disney's Mulan Live-Action Film Becomes The Studio's Highest Budgeted Movie!
In the last few decades Disney has been shelling out a substantial amount on producing live-action films of it's animated classics.
Disney is putting it's all to make Mulan's live-action a phenomenal work! If you notice, in the last few decades Disney has been shelling out a substantial amount on producing live-action films of it's animated classics. While Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie, is set to release this week, Mulan's production is underway. Back in 2018, it was suggested by the studio that the budget of Mulan might exceed the slated $290 million.
However, recently, actress Gong Li, who plays a witch named Xian Lang in Mulan, revealed to Weibo that the film has a budget exceeding $300 million! It is the largest for any Walt Disney Pictures film to date. This obviously does not include the Marvel films that were also partly produced by Disney (such as Avengers: Endgame which cost the studio a whopping $350 million).
In the same interview, Gong suggested that the reason behind the studio exceeding its prior set budget is due to the extensive visual effects work required to bring the character and thee mysticism-rich world of Mulan to life. Considering how the film is set with a war background and has a full-fledged battle scene as well, it makes great sense that the studio will have to make it look authentic.
Films like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast which required extensive CGI work cost the studio a rough $170-4255 million as production cost. However, Mulan's live-action is set to surpass the budget previously set by the studio. They do have a very pertinent reason behind ensuring the precise work on bringing Mulan to life and presenting a phenomenal work to the audience.
The past decade has given Disney Studios an idea of how a majority of their overseas profits have been courtesy the Chinese market. Considering the attention and gains that the production house has received from the chines audience, the studio is prompted to ensure that the film appeals to the relatively new and large demography. Also, since the film is loosely based on the life of a classic Chinese legend, all the more reason for the makers to bring precision and respect work around Mulan.
Mulan, directed by Niki Caro, stars Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Gong Li and Jet Lee. The film is scheduled to open on March 27, 2020.
