If Joss Whedon had everything going by his plans, then we would have seen Captain Marvel made her debut in Marvel Cinematic Universe four years back. Not just her, even Spider-Man would have made his debut in MCU a year back, unlike his first appearance in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Also, Brie Larson was not even cast then! So what are we talking about? #HerInEveryHero: Rakul Preet, Tamannaah, Samantha Akkineni and Kajal Aggarwal Attend Captain Marvel's Promotional Event As a Fabulous Foursome.

In 2015, Joss Whedon, fresh off the success of the 2012 film The Avengers, wanted to include two new superheroes at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. If you remember the film, the final scene had Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow begin to train the new Avengers team (consisting of Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon and War Machine), after Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) retire to their homes and worlds (of course, that was temporary).

As per an early draft of the script, Joss wanted to include Spider-Man and Captain Marvel in that scene. However, his demand was not met as MCU chief Kevin Feige shot down the idea. Did Captain Marvel Negative Review Attack Cause Rotten Tomatoes to Ban User Comments Before a Film’s Release?

You can watch the original scene here:

Now an old interview of Feige given to Birth. Movies. Death. has gone viral, in which he reveals why he didn't want that to happen. Feige had said, "(Captain Marvel) was in a draft. But to me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, ‘Who is that?’ It’s just not the way we’ve done it before. The way we reveal Scarlet Witch at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots. Joss said, ‘We’ll cast her later!’ And I said, ‘Yeah Joss, we’ll cast her later. We’re not putting her in there!’"

It makes a lot of sense that Feige didn't go with Whedon's original plan, and gave both the superheroes their moments to shine later in the MCU. As he said, fans would have wondered where Spidey and Carol Danvers popped all of a sudden. Also, while Spider-Man was a popular superhero, Captain Marvel was not a well-known name outside the Marvel legion.

Now she is all set to make her debut in the movie titled after her. Captain Marvel has Oscar winner Brie Larson in the lead, with Samuel L Jackson, Clark Gregg, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou and Jude Law in the cast as well. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is all set to release on March 8.
