What makes Captain Marvel so important in MCU is that the superhero is the most powerful hero in the franchise, perhaps even more than Thor. Also, it precedes Avengers: Endgame and is supposed to answer a very crucial question as to what to expect from Captain Marvel in the war against Thanos. And the movie also answers some very interesting question about some of the characters and events in MCU that may not be so bothering, but did make you think at least once for the reason. Like the five below:
Q1. Why Didn't Thanos Get Tesseract Earlier?
In Guardians of the Galaxy, it was shown that Ronan The Accuser was working with Thanos in finding the Infinity Stones (before betraying him). In Captain Marvel, we find out that Ronan wants to find out a source of energy that Mar-Vell (Annette Benning) has been hiding very successfully in a secret place, and that source turns out to be the Tesseract. Later, when he tries to get his hands on the MacGuffin, his plans are foiled by Captain Marvel and he is now more curious about this new superhero than the stone. Thus, Thanos had to stay in the shadows for a bit more to get his hands on the stone. Q2. How Does the Tesseract Come in Nick Fury's Possession?
In Captain America: The First Avenger, Howard Stark gets possession of Tesseract, which happened in the '40s. And then, somehow, the Tesseract comes in the possession of Mar-Vell who wants to use it to save the Skrulls, and accidentally gives Carol her powers. In the climactic fight with the Kree, Mar-Vell's alien cat swallows Tesseract and Captain Marvel asks Nick Fury to keep it. While he knows that the energy from Tesseract can power weapons, it is only after the events of Thor that he really starts experimenting on it.
Q3. How did Fury Come Up With the Name, 'Avengers Initiative'?
The name 'Avengers Initiative' was not something that Nick Fury came up on his own. Inspired by Captain Marvel's heroics, Nick Fury decides to find more superheroes like her to defend the Earth. Near the end of the film, he is seen drafting his plan to find the superheroes to protect the Earth. He first named it as 'Protector Initiative', and then his eyes fell on the picture of the pre-superhero Carol Danvers and her plane that shows her nickname to be "Avenger". And thus, Fury renames it to "Avengers Initiative". Poignant!
Q4. How Did Nick Fury Lose His Eye?
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury tells Steve Rogers, "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye". We expected to find who that someone was in Captain Marvel, where a younger Fury started off his journey with both his eyes intact. A car crash nearly made him lose his eye, but didn't. Our next point of suspicion was the disguised Skrulls. But it wasn't anything we expected. Instead, it was Goose The Cat who scratched Fury's left eye, after it got irked with the latter trying to play with it. What a fall of expectations!
Q5. Why Did Captain Marvel Leave Earth, And Does She Survive Thanos' Snap?
Captain Marvel leaves Earth with the mission of rehabilitating the surviving Skrulls in a safe corner of the universe. On the way, I am sure she must have faced more resistance from Kree, led by Ronan The Accuser. As for the second part of the question, not only does she survive Thanos, but also Captain Marvel returns to Earth after getting Fury's distress signal, joining Captain America, Black Widow, Bruce Banner and War Machine.
