We saved Brooklyn Nine-Nine when it was cancelled. But now the show has been hit by the kind of tragedy which has no coming back from. The gorgeous corgi who played the role of Captain Holt's pet, named Cheddar, on the show has passed away. The dog's real name was Stewart and he was 13 years old. Stewart's owner took to Instagram to share the tragic news. The owner wrote that Stewart passed away peacefully and lots of fun on his last day. "We went to the beach (his favourite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company,” his owner wrote. Chelsea Peretti Exits Brooklyn Nine-Nine and We Feel Like the Human Embodiment of the Heartbreak Emoji.

“Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah," the Instagram post by Stewart's owner further read.

Cheddar has often played a very important part to the plot in various episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Remember when he was Jake and Amy's ring bearer? Also, Cheddar came in handy during one of the annual Halloween heists. Terry Crews Wants to Play King Triton in 'The Little Mermaid'.

Executive producer Dan Goor has said in an interview that Cheddar/Stewart was quite a favourite on the sets. He often came in the way it shots but no one seemed to mind it. “In the episode where Gina and Terry try to boost Captain Holt’s social media presence by making Instagram pictures of Cheddar, there is a scene where Holt gives a moving speech filled with gravitas about honour and duty,” Goor said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Every time he began that monologue, Cheddar, who was just off screen, would let out a soft, unending howl, which cracked up everyone on set. Every time.”

Although, to be noted, Stewart was not the only canine who played Cheddar on the show. Stewart's sister Stella also filled in for him. There are a few other dogs who also played the role.
