Blue Beetle has finally hit theatres and alongside it brings a whole lot of DC goodness that sets up the character extremely well for future films. With the film focusing on the third Blue Beetle from the comics, Jaime Reyes’ story here sets up a future that might dive deep into the mythos of the character from the comics. There are teases of previous Blue Beetles, Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, in here, and the film’s ending does set up a sequel that teases where we can expect to see the character go in future films. So, let’s dive deep into the ending and post-credits of Blue Beetle.
How Does the Ending and Post-Credits Set Up a Blue Beetle Sequel?
Blue Beetle starts off with an opening that tells us that Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle and owner of the Kord Industries, is missing. With his company being taken over by Victoria Kord, she gets obsessed with the alien scarab that possesses the power of the Beetle, and finally finds it which she intends to use to build weapons. The plan is directly objected by Ted’s daughter, Jenny, who wants the company to stop building the weapons and steals it off Victoria.
With Jaime looking for a job in an effort to save his family’s home, he bumps into Jenny who promises to offer him a job after he loses his house keeping job while defending her from Victoria. However, when he arrives at Kord Industries, he sees Jenny escaping the security with a burger box in her hand, and she gives the box to him and asks him to not open it and protect it with his life. But Jaime’s curiosity does get the better of him, and he finds the scarab inside which chooses him as the host and transforms him into the Blue Beetle.
Wanting to get the scarab out of his body, Jenny decides to help Jaime while being on the run from Victoria. She takes him to the Kord Estate where she reveals her father’s facility filled with Blue Beetle tech and has a heart-to-heart with him where she tells Jaime that her father just disappeared one day. Over there its revealed that for the scarab to be taken out of him, Jaime must die, and the film then focuses on him trying to be symbiotic with the scarab and embracing his new identity as the superhero.
Through the course of the film though, Victoria is able to get her hands on Jaime and uploads the Scarab’s data into the Indestructible Man who is equipped with OMAC, an exoskeleton of the Kord Industries. A final battle ensues and Jaime does come out on top here with Victoria and Indestructible Man dying. The ending of the film does tease new adventures for Jaime as he embraces being Blue Beetle and starts a romance with Jenny as well.
But it’s the post-credits scene that teases us what we can expect for the future. Over here, a message ends up playing in Ted’s facility that reveals that he is actually alive. The message comes from Ted himself who has a message saying to tell Jenny that he is actually alive. There is a second post-credits scene too, but its just of Uncle Rudy watching a cartoon.
So, if Blue Beetle does continue in the future (which I hope it does), we can expect to see Ted Kord make his debut as well and join Jaime alongside his superhero adventures. For those who don’t know who Ted Kord is, in the comics he is the second Blue Beetle who uses the power of the scarab to boost his own tech.
