It's like Miley Cyrus was asked to relive her Hannah Montana days by Netflix. Because in the third episode of season 5 of Black Mirror, the singer played a pop star who is not what she has been projected to be. Oh yes, evil definitely lurks in this part like every other Black Mirror episode. However, it is not scary or terrifying anymore. In fact, it is believable and majorly predictable. Not to mention the impeccable Bollywood twist by the end of the episode that we definitely didn't see coming (sense the sarcasm, peeps!)

Let's first give you a premise of the story. Ashley Too is an AI with Ashley O emotions. Ashley O is a pop star who has a humongous fan-following, much like Hannah Montana. One of her big fans is Rachel, a 15-year-old who gets hold of the Ashley Too model and finds a friend in the AI. Things go haywire when the real Ashley O falls into a pit of trouble thanks to her aunt/manager. How does that affect her AI? Well, that is interesting considering how the tech geeks made the Ashley Too AI equipment with all of Ashley O's intelligence and thoughts. The rest is basically a fun ride as things start tumbling around them all as they try to figure out a way out of the rise in technology.

Written by Charlie Brooker, the episode is directed by Anne Sewitsky. Unoriginal is the word that I can think of when I speak about the episode. We have all been fed with stories of the real stars and their struggles as they cope with fame and maintaining an image, yada, yada, yada... Ashley O's character is no different as she too suffers from trying to do what she really wants as opposed to what she is being asked to do. It's basically an Indian parent telling their kids with writing instincts to take up Engineering because Sharma ji's lad is also doing it with flying colours.

Miley Cyrus is amazing as always. She plays the troubled pop star who is coping with a lot of concerns and even battles for life as she is being manipulated. It's a forlorn version of Hannah Montana all over again but instead of enjoying to play her rockstar self, Miley here is not thrilled to be Ashley O. She would like to get rid of the lavender-hued bob wig, the light and delicate makeup, the extreme sensitive content of music, none of which defines her. The supporting cast played by Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Susan Pourfar also do a good job. Although it is mostly Miley and Susan who stand out in the episode, the others do have a good standing in the episode.

Black Mirror 6/5 #AshleyToo 💜

Overall, it's a decent watch but nothing compared to the standards set by the previous episodes of Black Mirror. This one won't scare the bejesus out of you or make you terrified of the harms of technology. It will simply make you sympathise the struggles of an artist and the manipulation they have to conquer amid all concerns.
