The second trailer for Barbie gave us an idea for what exactly the movie is about, and it looks like a complete delight. Seeing Barbie deal with an existential crisis of her own as she moves out of the dream world to travel to the real world, it looks like the movie is going to be all about her trying to find herself – oh and also, of course, Ken is joining her too (we can’t really forget Ken now). However, the trailer for Barbie did remind us of a certain few films from the past. Barbie Trailer Out! Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Leave Home Behind to Understand the Purpose of Life! (Watch Video).

The story of someone getting out of their dream world to learn about the secrets of the universe, a lot of movies have had these kinds of plots before, and honestly, it looks like Barbie will be another great addition to that catalogue. So, with the second trailer for Barbie out, let’s take a look at five movies the Margot Robbie-starrer reminded us of.

Watch the Trailer for Barbie:

Pleasantville

If Barbie is about a toy mascot leaving a dream world to go into a real one, then Pleasantville is all about folks from the real world going into a 1950s TV show that represents a pleasant utopia. With some great performances by stars like Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels, William H Macy and more, Pleasantville is a fantastical watch that certainly provides for an interesting viewing.

The Truman Show

Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show is a watch like no other. A satirical and psychological comedy-drama, the film focuses on Truman Burbank, an ordinary man who has spent his entire life not knowing that he has lived on a television set all along, with the show even being based on him. It’s that sense of psychology that makes The Truman Show such an engaging watch, and Barbie heavily has the similar aesthetics attached to it.

Don’t Worry Darling

Perhaps the one film on this list that might have the most in common with Barbie (not in themes, but rather the set up), Don’t Worry Darling sees a housewife live in a perfect society, however, certain events lead her to see the cracks in reality which makes her question about the world she is living in. Bolstered by Florence Pugh’s amazing performance, the film is worth a shot.

The Matrix

Another film that sees a “chosen one” type of character get out of the reality known as the Matrix to seek the secrets of the universe, this Keanu Reeves-starred is an action-packed thrill ride like no other. It’s a remarkable sci-fi film that ushered in a new era, and with some cutting-edge visuals, this something that should be on everyone’s watch list.

The Lego Movie

Just like Barbie, The Lego Movie is also based on a toy line and oh my, is it a wonderful watch. Seeing the everyday normal guy Emmet get pulled out of his reality to save the universe, the movie is a roaring achievement in animation and storytelling.
