At this point of time, Marvel's Avengers Infinity War is now the fourth highest grossing movie of all time, as well the fourth movie to enter the two million dollar club. With James Cameron's Avatar still topping the list, Infinity War stands behind Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (not considering inflation). The superhero ensemble movie has outperformed itself at various markets, including the US and India (where it became the highest grossing Hollywood movie and the only one to gross more than Rs 200 crore). With such a huge win in the credit, it looks like the Marvel creative team can gloat over its success.
This also makes them troll their closest rival, DC movies, for not able to gain the same amount of success, despite having more popular comics superheroes. Recently, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writers of Captain America Civil War, Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4, threw a huge burn at the studios making DC movies when they appeared on Kevin Smith's podcast.
Talking about Marvel's success, Markus told Smith, "I would look at what Marvel did out of necessity in that they didn't have their A-list characters.. They (Marvel) didn't have Spider-Man, they didn't have the X-Men (those properties were with Sony and Fox respectively), and they went down the line and found a – I mean, he's pretty f**king famous, he's Iron Man, but he wasn't then – and they made a really good movie out of him."
So when talking about what went wrong with DC's planning, he continued, "I might put Batman and Superman and everybody else, I mean Wonder Woman is doing fine, aside for a second, go through the vast world and go, ‘That guy’ or ‘That girl’, and go, ‘Let's just make a really good movie and not a universe and see what happens.’ There's a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall." OUCH!
The burn is cruel but there is a harsh truth in it! After all, none of DC movies, after Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, have even got into the billion-dollar club. Save for Wonder Woman, not a single movie got critical acclaim. At the same time, the entire Marvel franchise's box office worth is just about $17 billion with five movies in the billion-dollar club.
