If you are one of the very few ones who has not seen Marvel's biggest movie of the year, Avengers Infinity War, and plan to do so, the following post is filled with SPOILERS. So at the Infinity War, the main antagonist, the purple Bruce-Willis lookalike alien Thanos has found all the six Infinity Stones and use them to destroy half the living things in the universe. Along with billions of people, the snap also killed superheroes like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Groot, Falcon, Winter Soldier and Scarlet Witch (along with, Nick Fury and Maria Hill). Not to mention, Loki, Heimdall, Gamora and Vision who were killed earlier by Thanos.
However, more than Thanos, Marvel fans are angrier with Star-Lord and Thor for letting that happen, the former getting the most flak. When Iron Man and co. managed to subdue Thanos and nearly wrench the Infinity Gauntlet from his hand on Titan, Star-Lord loses his control over his temper on learning Gamora's death and attacks him. This makes Thanos regain control of his senses and defeating the superheroes before he escapes to Earth with five stones.
Then on Earth, when Thanos gets hold of the final Mind stone from a dead Vision, Thor nearly incapacitates him with his axe, Storm-breaker. However, Thanos reminds him that he should have aimed for the head rather than the chest, that Thor did. And then he snaps.
Since then both Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) have been targets of fan outrage on social media, especially Pratt. So to settle things once and for all, the directors of Infinity War, Anthony and Joe Russo, cleared things up in a recent interview.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, Joe Russo addressed the online hatred Pratt is getting for his character. He said, "I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that axe into Thanos' chest and not his head. Because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge. Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened." So does that mean Joe proportions more blame on Thor? He continued, "I think he’s (Thor) been on a very complicated journey where he struggles with his ability to feel worthy and be worthy. In a lot of ways, he is the driving hero’s arc of the movie which stands in direct opposition to Thanos’ argument."
Joe also mentioned that the outrage is quite unnecessary if you really understand what these characters went through in terms of emotional turmoil. He added, "These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories. Stories can teach us things and that we should try to see every choice from the perspective of the character that made the choice." Well, Star-Lord is not the first character to not think rationally when it comes to a shocking revelation. Remember how Iron Man went all crazy on Bucky in Captain America: Civil War when he learnt that the brain-washed assassin killed his parents, leading to Avengers getting split for proper?
Also, like to remind you of Doctor Strange's final line to Tony before his disappearance, 'There was no other way!' This is the end-game after all!
