Avengers Infinity War, Black Panther, Mission: Impossible Fallout - 10 Most Enjoyable Hollywood Films of 2018 That Released in India
Do note, this list is not about the best English movies of the year.
We are getting into that phase where Hollywood films can give some tough competition to Indian films at the box office. We have had a film, Avengers Infinity War, went on to make more than Rs 200 crore at the Indian box office and has become the highest grossing Hollywood film in India, Not even Aamir Khan's Thugs of Hindostan, Salman Khan's Race 3 and Shah Rukh Khan's Zero could manage to do that! Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Shazam! - 9 Superhero Movies We Are Super-Excited To Watch in 2019!
It is not just the box office numbers. There have been some highly entertaining movies that came out this year, not just from the superhero genre. We have compiled the list of 10 Hollywood flicks that came out this year which provided high entertainment value and was a treat to watch on the big screen. These are films that were released in India, and not just in the US. Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, Chris Hemsworth, Tarana Burke - Check Out The Best Hollywood Gossips Of This Week!
Honourable mentions: Deadpool 2, Ant-Man & The Wasp.
Avengers: Infinity War
There will be no justice to this list if I do not begin with the biggest of them all. Avengers Infinity War is not only a great superhero movie, but it also ends up being a milestone in film-making. It manages a huge roster of cast members and multiple plotlines with amazing dexterity and is filled with great superhero moments. Above all, despite being a mainstream film with enough heroes, Avengers Infinity War made you root for a flick that lets the villain get away with the victory, with the final scene having him being content with destroying half the universe. That's brave!
Black Panther
Black Panther is not only a good superhero movie but it is also a cultural milestone. Rarely do we get a coloured superhero flick, made on a big budget, earning more than a billion dollars at the box office. Black Panther also gave us the first Marvel supervillain that we nearly empathised with in Michael B Jordan's Killmonger, no offence to Loki. The whole Wakandan sequences are spell-binding and the women characters are terrific. The only downer is a premise is very predictable and the overload of detectable CGI in the climax is disappointing.
Incredibles 2
Even though it came out 14 years late (and yet behaves as if the gap never happened), Incredibles 2 is an incredibly delightful superhero flick filled with some great visual gags (looking at you, Jack-Jack vs Raccoon scene) and amazing visuals. It lacks a good villain as the first film had and the big twist is easily predictable, but the sequel is entertaining and exciting in its own way. Let's hope we need not wait for another 14 years for Incredibles 3.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Mission: Impossible movies are increasingly becoming more about if Tom Cruise survives the next ming-bogging stunt (and hallelujah! he does!). And yet that is enough for us! Fallout is easily one of the best films in the franchises with some daredevil stunts, jaw-dropping camerawork and a highly competent direction from Christopher McQuarrie. Wondering what Cruise will do next - go to the moon before Fast & Furious team?
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
I can sum up the movie's quality in just one line - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not only the best-animated film of the year, but also the best superhero movie in recent times, yes, even considering Avengers Infinity War! Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse does the best justice to Spider-Man as a comic book character, enhanced by great storytelling and dazzling animations. Unlike the Deadpool movies, it also impossible manages to find that balance between self-humour and emotions.
Isle of Dogs
When can Wes Anderson go wrong? I guess, never! After the underrated Fantastic Mr Fox, Wes Anderson returns to stop-motion animation once again in this wonderful film that is funny and yet sentimental in equal doses. The voice-cast featuring the likes of Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Courtney B Vance, Harvey Keitel, Liev Schreiber, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, and F Murray Abraham is excellent.
Ready Player One
Even when he is not in the best of the phases, the mater film-maker Steven Spielberg can still make highly competent films. His 2018 offering is a visual masterpiece filled with the most Easter eggs you can cram in one movie (with the finest one in that The Shining sequence). The plot is pretty okay, but the thrills, and the commentary on how we are obsessed with virtual reality, are captivating!
A Quiet Place
No one expected Jim Halpert of The Office to make one of the most inventive horror films in recent times. John Krasinski has excellently made a nearly silent horror movie, where silence is not a tic and is what builds the tension in the film. Also, it features a superb performance from the cast, especially a terrific Emily Blunt.
Ralph Breaks the Internet
You can accuse this sequel of being a Disney tribute than being an actual movie what's with those Easter eggs and tribute declared to popular Disney icons, including from Star Wars and Marvel Cinematic Universe. And yet Ralph Breaks the Internet doesn't end up being another Emoji Movie and is a highly entertaining film about friendship and coping with the lead of parting with someone dear.
Aquaman
Plot-wise, DC's reclusive big hit has nothing to crow about as it spends too much time in exploring Arthur Curry's origin story and offering exposition on the myth of Atlantis. However, director James Wan more than compensates for that with some kinetic action sequences, amazing underwater sequences and VFX that may not be the best of the year, and yet delivers on the big screen. DC is slowly and definitely catching up with Marvel with the box office success of this one!
Do note, this list is not about the best English movies of the year. Watch for this space for more on that!
