Avengers EndGame: How The Marvel Movie Sets Up James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 in an Exciting Manner (HUGE SPOILER ALERT)
We have the team, the main plotline, the director returning and the villain. All we need to wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 to release, once Gunn completes his work on Suicide Squad and begins the development of the film.
Avengers: EndGame is the culmination of the 21 movies that came before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with 2008's Iron Man. Some of the journeys of certain superheroes end here, but Avengers: EndGame is also the beginning of many new interesting pathways. We know that MCU is not ending here, with Spider-Man: Far From Home about to release in July. The MCU chief, Kevin Feige, has recently said that this Spidey movie marks the end of Phase 3 in MCU, and not EndGame. Watching Avengers: EndGame makes you realise why. (This Post is filled with HUGE SPOILERS about Avengers: EndGame. Read at your own risk).
So what after Spider-Man: Far From Home? Which films are coming out in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We are sure that there will be sequels to Black Panther, Doctor Strange. Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, with a spin-off on Black Widow (though seeing how Avengers: EndGame deals with her character, we don't how this film would work out).
The only confirmed film in Phase 4 is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol III, that marks the return of director James Gunn to the project (after his ouster by Disney over some distasteful old tweets). The ending of Avengers: EndGame gives some exciting clarity on where this film will head.
If you have seen EndGame, you know that the Avengers who survived Thanos' snap finally manage to reverse it and bring the obliterated superheroes back to life. This included the Guardians of the Galaxy members like Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis and Groot, reuniting with Rocket Raccoon who had survived the snap. Gamora is still dead, but her past self from 2014, thanks to time travel shenanigans, is alive in the new timeline and has gone missing since the climactic war. This version of Gamora hadn't met any of the Guardians before, and she was surprised that her future version was in love with Star-Lord (who, the film tries to depict as an idiot, perhaps as a dig to what he did in Infinity War). So finding Gamora and making her fall in love with him all over again is now Star-Lord's new mission that will play in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Nebula, a big MVP in EndGame, has also joined the Guardians. And there is one more exciting addition too.
After the dust had settled after the final war and Thanos is defeated and destroyed, Thor returns to the newly settled Asgard on Earth and makes Valkyrie the ruler of the settlement. He then joins Rocket on board the Milano, leading to a funny tussle between Star-Lord and himself as to who would lead the ship. After much banter, Thor agrees that Star-Lord should be the captain, though there is a twinkle in his eye that says he is going to wrest control from him.
This now almost confirms that Thor will be in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, hinting at some very funny moments between Thor and Peter Quill. Gamora's pursuit will be the main thread of the film.
As for the villain, that has already been hinted in one of the mid-credit scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. In that scene, the defeated leader of the Sovereign race, Ayesha, is seen looking at a huge pod that is a birthing device. She says whatever comes out of it will be her means to defeat the Guardians, and she calls it 'Adam'. Marvel fans would know this entity as Adam Warlock, a powerful being that acts as an anti-hero in several issues of the Marvel comics.
