Before the first trailer of EndGame came out, Marvel was very secretive about revealing the name of the sequel to Avengers: Infinity War. The key to the title was told to be given in Infinity War itself. So Marvel fans had begun to make various speculations as to what it could be. Of course, many of them put their bets on EndGame, which is what Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) tells Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) after giving Time Stone to Thanos (Josh Brolin). 'We're in the End Game now'. And when the trailer came out, it was confirmed that the movie would be called Avengers: EndGame. Avengers: Endgame Director Joe Russo is a Huge Fan of Salman Khan’s Dabangg Franchise.
So was EndGame always the title that Marvel was going for with their biggest movie? While the previous Avengers titles like Age of Ultron and Infinity War were names of major storylines in Marvel comics, EndGame was the title of many chapters in the comics and not just specific to the Thanos story. So when director Joe Russo, who made Infinity War and now EndGame, was in India to promote the film, we got the opportunity to ask him about whether he chose EndGame to make sure fans' expectations are not pinned to one particular storyline.
To which, Joe Russo replied, "We do take ideas from comics that we then try to build out. But that's not always the case. With EndGame, we just felt like there is a poetic importance to it because Tony said it in (Age of) Ultron, Strange said it in Infinity War. This is the end, the final chapter of the first 20 movies. Everything about it seemed poetically relevant so that's how we came up with the name." Avengers EndGame Director Joe Russo Reveals How Rajinikanth's Enthiran Almost Inspired The Climax of Age of Ultron.
Here's the scene in Avengers: Infinity War where Doctor Strange utters 'EndGame':
So when asked if going with EndGame had always been the plan for Marvel, Joe answered, "I mean, the way that we do these things, it is impossible to know what you are going to do. We have ideas in our head. We certainly recently put that line in the movie with Doctor Strange. But we have no idea how the audience is going to respond to the movie. We like to collect information two months after the movie comes out. (We) think about what they responded to, what are they reacting to. So, until, we are literally ready to release the trailer...we sat in the room when we were working on the trailer and said 'Okay, this is what we are it', and you know, that is what it becomes."
In conclusion, he added, "So we have an idea. It is primarily in our heads. But we can't commit to it until, you know, it is time for the movie to be named." So Marvel fans, there you go the answer to why EndGame has been the chosen title!
What's more interesting is that when Marvel announced its Phase 3 movies in 2014, they had made Infinity War saga into a two-parter. Later, they backtracked and made it sound like both the films are standalone movies. Which isn't exactly true, since EndGame is a continuation of what happened in Infinity War, and how the surviving superheroes will reverse the implications of Thanos' snap from the first movie.
So after talking to Joe Russo, we can't help but quote Nick Fury's (Samuel L Jackson) famous line when it comes to how EndGame became the title - 'There was an idea...'! Avengers: EndGame is scheduled to release on April 26.
