Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with Sylvester Stalone, Bruce Willis, Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme, was one of the leading action stars in the '80s and the '90s. Arnold was one of the more popular ones when it comes to global popularity, including in India. These stars were the reason why action genre became so popular in that era, fuelled ahead by the likes of Tom Cruise, and of course, the superhero movies that rule this part of the 21st Century. But of course, the likes of Arnold were the true superheroes of their generation - an infallible protagonist with a penchant for killer catchphrases, bulking muscles and being impervious to bullets. Speaking purely of Arnold, you must be knowing his life-story by now. Before he conquered Hollywood with his biceps, Arnold was a professional bodybuilder and had won the Mr Universe title at a mere age of 20. He made his film debut with a lead role in the 1969 film Hercules in New York. But it takes Arnold more than a decade to break through into stardom, which came with the titular role of Conan in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian. A negative role in James Cameron's The Terminator, gave Arnold a global recognition. With further action roles in movies like Red Sonja, Commando, The Running Man, Predator, Total Recall, True Lies et al, Arnold established himself as an action legend.
Compared to his closest competitor, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold, who later became the future Governor of California, can boast of doing one thing better - a better comic streak. This was capitalised in films like Jingle All The Way, Kindergarten Cop, True Lies and The Last Action Hero. Arnold also has the knack of making the cheesiest of quips work, and the writers of his movies fill them with loads. T2 ignored the evil touch of the dialogue in the original and gave it a more emotional nuance, while the sequels after made it sound more comical.
