After Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, more female superhero films in pipeline - Read Kevin Fiege's statement
Well, you'll get Scarlett Johansson as the devious Russian agent Natasha Romanoff and probably more female-led superhero films!
Have you been waiting for a standalone Black Widow movie for too long? Well, you'll get Scarlett Johansson as the devious Russian agent Natasha Romanoff and probably more female-led superhero films! Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige just dropped a major hint that work on more female superhero standalone films are in the pipeline. While it was recently confirmed that a standalone Black Widow film is in the making with Cate Shortland as the director and Scarlett Johansson reprising her role. Turns out Marvel has got more in store for us!
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feige said, “With [Ant-Man and The Wasp] and now with Captain Marvel and many movies to be announced in the near future, I’m anxious for the time where it’s not a novelty that there is a female-led superhero movie, but it is a norm." He further added, “And it is less a story of, ‘Oh, look, a female hero,’ and it’s more a story of, ‘Oh, what’s this about? Who’s this character? I’m excited to see that.’ And I think we can get there.”
Pivotal female characters have often supported the main dudes in every Marvel film, however, this year has been rather different. Marvel's approach towards its female characters has evolved with Ant-Man and the Wasp being the first MCU film to have a female character in the title. MCU's next film is also about a female-superhero fondly known as Captain Marvel (originally Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson), which is set to release in March 2019, ahead of Avengers 4. It did take quite a long time and almost a decade for MCU to bring about a female-led film.
On the same, Feige added, “I think there are a lot of reasons, not the least of which was fighting for many years the erroneous notion that audiences did not want to see a female-led hero [film] because of a slew of films 15 years ago that didn’t work. And my belief was always that they didn’t work not because they were female-led stories — they didn’t work because they were not particularly good movies.”
The news and potential of more female-led superheroes is surely a progressive and good news. Hopefully, with Captain Marvel, Marvel would also be able to join the magnanimity of DC Comics' hit female standalone film, Wonder Woman.
