Diwali Blockbusters: When Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan Ruled the Box Office

This Diwali we all will have the privilege of watching an Aamir Khan film in the theatres. Cosmos aligned and somehow after Raja Hindustani, another Aamir Khan film is releasing in the festive season. YRF's Thugs of Hindostan is opening in theaters on November 8. Well, be sure that the movie will bring in the moolah for the makers. Because if history is anything to go by, Diwali releases have been pretty profitable at the box office. Even the not very good ones have done well. In case you do not remember, we are here to brush up your memory.

Now, we can go way back in the past to prove that Diwali is a money minting season for movies. But when we can do the same by just going back six years, then why bother. Following are the movies that have been Diwali blockbusters in the past few years.

2012 - Son of Sardaar, Jab Tak Hai Jaan

This is a rarity. Two big movies released on the same day and both of them managed to earn big. Son of Sardaar starred Ajay Devgn as the main lead, with Sonakshi Sinha playing the heroine. Jab Tak Hai Jaan was Yash Chopra's swan song and it starred Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. While the former earned Rs 88.68 crore, the latter earned Rs 101.59 crore.

2013 - Krrish 3

The sequel to Hrithik Roshan's superhero film Krrish managed to draw the audience to the box office once again. The movie earned Rs 175 crore at the box office.

2014 - Happy New Year

Once again, Shah Rukh Khan decided to rule the box office. The movie directed by Farah Khan earned over Rs 178 crore.

2015 - Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

This time Salman Khan took over the box office responsibility because ruling Eid was not enough. The movie earned Rs 198 crore during its run.

2016 - Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shivaay

Ranbir Kapoor starrer romantic drama might have made us all cry because of its intensity, but it made the makers very happy. Very, very happy. The movie earned Rs 106 crore at the box office. Ajay Devgn starrer Shivaay managed to earn Rs 84.83 crore.

2017 - Secret Superstar, Golmaal Again

The movie had Aamir Khan only in a cameo, and yet it managed to strike gold at the box office. Zaira Wasim starrer movie earned Rs 68 crore at the box office. Golmaal Again turned out to be the biggest hit of the year and earned Rs 205 crore at the box office.

Now, we only have to wait and watch Thugs of Hindostan break all records at the box office. Well, at least that is what we are expecting it to do. Thugs of Hindostan has been directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and stars Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles along with Aamir.
